View Full Version : Can I mention anything about ADHD/Meds to employer??
NickL30 09-22-07, 07:45 PM I have found a dramatic difference when I take the Prozac & Ritalin. The thing is that Ritalin only lasts about 4 hours.
My mistake was thinking I could taper off of the Prozac. I was completely wrong.
If I don't experience any adverse reactions on this combo of Prozac & Ritalin, the doc will increase the Prozac & give me Adderall XR.
My performance at work has been nothing short of a disaster in the last month. Much has to do with errors of omission, work that is incomplete because of the rush to meet daily deadlines leading to the errors of ommission and this general feeling of panic, racing thoughts, unable to focus.
One step that is accidently overlooked, checking the wrong box, a journal entry that accidently gets reversed can have major repercussions. It can literally drive you crazy.
I have 30 days to 'significantly improve' or I am out. I DREAD going to work each day. I need the meds to calm down. I am expected to work between 12-16 hours each day -- from 7am - 9pm or later.
Can I tell my employer anything. Not accomodation for ADHD per se but just the effects of no meds VS. the meds the doctor prescribed??
This is an employer in the boondox of CT (Hartford CTY), very very cliquish, high school & suburban.
QueensU_girl 09-22-07, 09:16 PM You might just want to say that you have had a health concern (meaning your meds change) that has affected your performance.
I wouldn't get into the details.
If you must give details to save your job, the info should only go to HR, not your Manager or fellow coworkers, I'd think.
Any other opinions, folks?

Any other opinions, folks?this is very good advice. there are a lot of things to think about. the first is what kind of relationship do you have with your boss. if it is very good and you know that he or she is open and understanding then honesty is a good thing to use. If you are unsure then the above is the best. does your work provide somekind of emplyee assistance program? usally these are offered free of charge, are supose to be anonymous, and can help point you in the right direction and give you good advice. Another thing that would really really help here is to have some kind of support system at work, like a trusted friend or somone that can kind of check up on you and give you back up. this is really true no matter what kind of meds we are on, with out it we tend to really feel alone and out there and that adds so much to the stress we feel each day. I know in my last job i felt so alone with no back up. this is about all that I can think of, any body else? good luck and let us know how things go.

He was the one gave this ultimatum. But I guess he wants to save face with his manager. Since June, 2two people have quit & one was fired after a few weeks.
And no I don't have any type of support system at work. I don't mean to sound bitter, but the people I work with are some of the most two faced, petty & vindictive people I have ever worked with. Very cliquish & high school. I am 30 years old, and most of the staff are in their early - mid 20's. Maybe this is the way it is in this part of New England (Hartford Cty, CT). I am also just drifting between apartments, living a sublet which expires at the end of this month. No furniture, just a chair, air mattress, clothing and my laptop computer.
The company also rehires many people who left the company and then hires them at a higher level. One of the supervisors I answer to is this woman 10 years younger than me who left the company, didn't like it & came back. We both have the same level, but I am supposed to be reporting to her.
What is worse is constantly dreading going to work and knowing that at any time, any minute I am going to be called into the office & severely reprimanded or fired.

I can see occasionally there may be times when you have a season when more hours need to be put in but IMO this is very extreme.
We are not designed to function in that manner.
How can you enjoy life when your are giving all of it to your employer?
Not only that, they also have you in a type of bondage in that you have no time or freedom to look at other employment options.
It really disturbs me when employers do this to people knowing that they can control your life due to the fact that they feel they own you because you need them for income.
The truth is, THEY DO OWN YOU!
Do you have any vacation time or personal days that you can use?
If so, get a good resume ready, read some interview basics and get to it.
Surely you have talents that can be used in a position that is more suited for you.
There are good employers out there but tough to find and it will take a concerted effort to find the right one.
Also, there is no way that I would tell them about your ADD.
I will end with one word, FREEDOM!
kilted_scotsman 09-23-07, 01:44 PM Look mate.... putting your two threads together
either......
1) Your job actually isn't as bad as you describe because no sane person would want to keep it in the long term
2) Your job is as bad as you describe in which case you should look closely at why you want to keep it.
One of the things about posting on a forum like this is that it makes one write down clearly what the issues are in order to get advice. This in itself is beneficial as the crux of the issue is often discovered when trying to concisely put a question and the relevant facts to others with absolutely no knowledge of the situation.
Try to read your own posts as we do...strangers and distanced from the situation, the answers to your questions are actually to be found in your own posts.
The job you describe is impossible to sustain in the long term, drugs or no drugs. No one could do it....to be expected to sustainably produce 100% accurate work while working 12-16 hour days.....sorry but any manager that expects that requires sectioning as they are clearly delusional and you are deluding yourself that you could do it if only you could get the right pills.
Some large corporations use these techniques to screen intakes..they do not expect anyone to stay in those positions for longer than a few years. If you don't get promotion they know you will leave, they actually want you to leave to free up the space for the next intake of college fresh blood. If you don't get the hint and leave of your own accord they will fire you.

steviefranchise 09-23-07, 04:19 PM The Scotsman as usual, direct and to the point while supplying a clear, colorful answer.
Whenever I see the Scotsman's post, I do not hesitate to read it...;)
HighFunctioning 09-23-07, 10:46 PM I agree with the others for the most part. 12-16 hours is ridiculous. I'm not going to say that I've never have been at work this long, but even on those rare instances, I doubt that I had been working effectively for that many hours (probably half or less).
How many hours to others in your department or in similar positions work? Have you had to work this many hours for a long time, or is this recent?
If it's just you, then I think their plan for you is obvious. Don't be tricked by manipulative bosses. It seems that they will take cheap shots at employees, giving the excuse that they are required to treat anyone else like such (but don't because the condition is not true for everyone else), but would let anyone else slide on other issues that are against company policy.
