View Full Version : Jobs that are not in a cubicle

There was a post on another thread that made me think of a bunch of jobs that DO NOT involve becoming a corporate drone working 9-5 in a cookie cutter job in a cubicle smack in the middle of a rabbit warren of other cubicles:

Work at Starbucks. Get a job on a cruise ship. Sell vacuums door to door. Start an organic nursery. Be a radio DJ. Drive a bus. Be a professional re-enactor (bring history to life for school children as Ben Franklin and the like.) Be a video games tester. Flip houses. Wait tables. Become a storm chaser. Be a bike messenger. Write greeting cards. Become a bartender. Give dance lessons, sewing lessons, golf lessons, or swimming lessons. Become an ADD coach. Work for a not-for-profit organization. Become a glass cutter. Design web pages. Join the circus. Drive an ice cream truck. Become a black jack dealer. Raise mice and sell them over the internet to snake owners (I know someone who did that and made a good living.) Become an auctioneer.

Can you think of more??

Become a contract consultant with corporations that allow you to work remotely.

Since you are being hired on an hourly fee basis and their primary use for you is whatever work they want you to do...most companies will be ok with working from your home office or virtually or telecommuting...whatever they call it.

You've heard the old addage "those who can't do cubicle, teach", right? :p

Get into corporate training and become a technical writer, content developer, instructional designer, graphic artist or some other expert that creates materials electronically.

The majority of the past 6 years I have worked remotely in some training capacity. It's great!

cubicle job!? ahhh--no! I used to HATE working in an office all day(inside sales) absolutely horrible. I always tried to NOT work.

The job I have is so far away from being in a cubicle. in fact there are times when i am sitting in a park cooking for my consumers or taking them out to eat. I dont think i could ever have a job that is in a cubicle. I hate closed in spaces no.1 and I have to be able to get out side a lot.

I have a cubicle but I am also on the road a lot. If I had to stay in my cubicle for the full 7.5 hours, I would have torn something up by now and probably be in jail!

"Cubicle" is a relative term. The trick is to follow your bliss and seek work you can be passionate about. Then space doesn't matter, even if you're working in a closet! Being in the state of perpetual hyperfocus, you'd never even notice.
