My son was dignosed with ADD about a year ago and we have tried several diet and herbal supplements, so far they may have helped a little but, lately my son is very aggressive, goes from being fine to calling me names because I said no to something, or screaming, hitting, out of control, our councelor suggested to put him in his room until he calms down and appologize for behavior. his room is destroyed and I'm very tired and frustrated. I have read alots of books and there is so much info that makes me overwelmed. Is part of ADD this crazy behavior? does meds would help with his mood swings? I m affraid of med b/c of addiction and dependence on them for the rest of his life. as well as side effects. I see the sadness in his face after 2-3 hours of being in his room screaming and hitting, and it kills me inside, he says, "Mom I can't help it and this used to happened once a week but lately is everyday when my husband is not at home to help. At school his teacher says that he is a sweet, well manner boy who struggles a little bit but doing well for the most part, she knows of his ADD and is helping him with different techniques. I tried to talk to him to open up to me and tell me if there is something going on at school or in our relationship or if something is bothering him but he said no. In two weeks we will be going to see a pediatric spchiatryst to talk about meds for him. Please anyone has similar situation???
I will be reading advice.
English is my second language apologize for typos.
Thanks

Wow I hear your pain and frustration! I have had similar experiences with my son, I think can sometimes be that he is "controlling" himself so much with "strangers" like at school etc, and when they get home they just let go on us. My son is on meds. I never thought twice about trying them, I want his life and my families lives to improve and I have seem first hand how they work as a friend had a son that was extreme ADHD! It was amazing how the meds helped him and now he is doing well with lots of friends and starting his own business etc.
Talk to your dr . as far as side effects go, you just don't use the meds that cause any extreme problems. I can't promise anything them working for this problem as my son still does this with me occasionally when worried or stressed about something and he is on meds. Meds don't seem to work when they are stressed or worried though.
Good Luck, you are trying to help him and that is being a great mom!

This certainly does not sound like ADD or ADHD alone !!

Does he have ODD or CD too?

ODD=oppositional defiant disorder

CD=conduct disorder
