Actually, this is one of the more subtle bits about the formal structure; the threshold that delineates the beginnings of the web occurs precisely at the point this ceases to be true.

Sparseness is one of the important underlying properties of the web. We think of metamodel space as a more-or-less uniform, infinite ‘sea’ of metamodels; any two metamodels in close proximity can be considered slightly varying representations of the same model. Obviously, any small region of the space can be considered representative of a range of plausible models of the same abstract conceptual object.

Choosing by some criteria the most nearly correct metamodel of those in a particular local cluster effectively invalidates the rest; if this one is right, these similar but different models must be wrong. So just the process of choosing the most likely candidate automatically clears the surrounding area of potential models.

The remaining set of potentially correct models becomes sparser as we model more (i.e., integrate more experience into our internal reality). Now, when we impose a web-like structure upon the whole, a second order effect occurs in which a property of the web’s structure allow us to narrow the set of potentially correct models further, dramatically increasing the degree of sparseness.

In the process of establishing the web we naturally model the form of its structure. Since identifying the correct model clears the local metamodel space of potentially correct models, we gain a sense of how close the next valid model could be. The shape of the space is also revealed, so we map a sort of curvature representing the maximum density of correct models at a given point.

I’ve referred to this previously as a sort of ‘Hamming distance’ in metamodel space, a function that allows you to start at a known metamodel, plug in an estimated distance to a different metamodel, and determine the size of the cluster of metamodels that might potentially be correct.

That means that we know within a certain precision what the correct model is even before we see it. By knowing where we start, how close adjacent nodes typically are, and how the space ‘curves’ with respect to these properties we can closely predict the correct metamodel in areas that haven’t yet been determined, i.e., areas in which we have absolutely no prior experience.

The structure of the web can dictate quite accurate approximations of knowledge we haven’t gained by any conventional means, and that includes the sort of knowledge that allows us to ‘know’ what another person might be thinking.

It also allows us to appear to be preternaturally quick in a pinch, or emergency situation in which others are more willing to accept any sound idea. If we eliminate others from the equation and privately explore a question there are no such considerations. We can make leaps that correctly leave us certain of the result, but with no practical way to communicate it to others.

One way of describing what Kurt Gödel did is this: he forged an answer to a tricky question by a process using metamodels and metarelationships in a particular local region of metamodel space, and then found an exceedingly complex way to express his result independently of any need to explain how he got there or what he saw.

The expression of his ideas was a self-supporting, formal system that didn’t require any agreement from others as to it’s truth, other than meeting the requirement of standing up to independent scrutiny. That’s a terrible, almost draconian burden to put on any human communication, requiring it to be provably correct regardless of whether any other person supported his claim.

And he wasn’t prepared to deal with the consequences of where he had to go in the first place; he apparently proceeded without a web, only dealing with the space local to his particular problem, which is that part of metamodel space addressing metamodels themselves. There is no way to put that genie back in the bottle; once you’ve looked metamodels in the eye, you’re stuck with ‘em.

Poor ol’ Kurt never developed the general solution to the problem of dealing with metalevels that we use, the web. His stopgap solution took the form of an intimate relationship with a woman, his wife, who helped keep the demons at bay until she passed away. A short time later Kurt went off in search of her.

The nature of an intimate relationship is deep, more than just two people with well-converged models of nearly the same experience. Communication between the two people in an intimate relationship represents a special case, in which the range of possibilities can expand far beyond what one could comfortably speak to in the general population.

There’s a principle of human communication that we call ‘the threshold of two’. If one person claims something is true, the claim carries a certain limited weight. Any other person can counter the claim, and his/her counterclaim carries the same, limited weight. But if only one other person backs up the first claim, the situation changes dramatically.

The counterclaim is now automatically deprecated, losing a great deal of its credibility, and what’s left may be revealed as an obvious attack. If there’s no evidence that a hidden purpose lay beneath the counterclaim, there’s a polite procedure by which the claimant can offer support. If the counterclaim was merely an attempt to influence the perception of reality in some small way, the response may not be so polite.

An intimately-converged web shared by two people transcends that simple threshold of two principle, although that’s where it begins. This is surely what propped up Kurt Gödel; he didn’t need to rely on a complex, formal system that could stand alone to convince his wife that what he saw was true. She knew that independently of any formal proof, in a way that often doesn’t require words at all.

Which is a good thing, because it‘s the tyranny of words that pins us in a reality that limits what we can say, let alone what we can convincingly claim to be true. A limited, intimately shared reality is widely recognized to expand the possible range of human expression, but only in a private world that is largely inaccessible to others, even if they also share an intimate reality.

An intimately converged web, however, shared between two people, has the potential to punch through that barrier of privacy. The web is already a superior way of modeling RRReality, and as described above, it gives us an ability to generate valid approximations of areas we’ve never visited.

But adding another person in an intimate relationship gives us an additional ‘fix’ on which metamodel represents the most plausible choice to represent a particular abstract conceptual entity.

In one sense, you can think of it as the addition of a trusted, second opinion that allows us to be surer that our personal biases aren’t influencing the choice too greatly. But the power of convergence multiplies this and other related advantages in a way that far outstrips the obvious advantages of just another opinion.

When applied to a web, the principle of ‘the threshold of two’ can provide an absolute reference to where and how the structure is positioned in metamodel space. In an intimately converged web, that anchor becomes much more certain.

And that means more absolute; any two sets of intimately converged webs should ultimately converge on the same, pseudo-absolute form. Is this form ‘absolute’ enough to be considered an accurate representation of RRReality? Probably not, and by definition we can’t imagine what the next required step would be like.

But it is almost certain to be good enough to break the isolation of the private, intimately converged context. There’s a lot about the details of this that we can’t predict very well yet, but in this case, it’s simply because we haven’t had time to think much about them.

And by we, we mean everyone, all of y’all certainly, and our kids, and so on. What we’re on about here is as often as not the beginnings of that process, and most of the rest is the ordinary kind of communal support Andrew and the forum fore-fathers and –mothers originally intended.

Which is, at the root, really serving the same purpose, without the direct belly flop into the messy problem of formulating a way of expressing the point of the process, and then the process itself, and the rest of it. We’re still not very good at admitting what we’re all on about, a practical demonstration of exactly how much of a prison language really is.

We know something about that; Kay and I started our journey toward understanding human communication largely because of a remarkable incident in which we completely discarded language for about half an hour, during which time we did some stuff that is still today regarded as impossible by every expert out there.

There isn’t really any good way to express just that much, but we can go a bit further. This event took place in the late Sixties, when we were still teens. We didn’t speak about it until more than twenty years later, despite the fact that it was never far from our thoughts, and that we both were conscious of its role as inspiration for our ongoing attempt to understand human communication in all forms.

In a very real sense, we were working all that time to reach the point that we could speak about it to each other in an ordinary way. We’re still working on being able to speak to others about it in an ordinary way, as should be obvious from all this.

We’re stuck with trying to find the general solution, not as big a problem as Kurt Gödel faced, but similar in that it needs to be independently arrived at by everyone before it applies in a significant way.

Now, that’s a trick that makes reading minds seem like child’s play…

giving about as close as it is possible to get - in fact just so freakingly well close --- OK so brain warpingly freaking close to the actual sensation of feeling as though it is telepathy.

This is in reference to the above 'quote', as related to a situation I was personally involved in, recently.


It reminded of the 'saying':

I went to dinner with a buddy, who always gets the same 'food'.

Steak, 'well done'.


I decided to also get steak, but I ordered mine 'medium rare'.

The rest of the 'fixins', were the same, for both of us.


Here's the funny part of the story...


When the food came to our table...I, as usual, was chattin' away, at my usual, 70mph..while my buddy had already cut into their steak, and ate about 1/4 of it, before I even took one bite of mine.

After I was chewing, for several minutes...I realized something was 'different'...

I then looked down, and noticed the 'marker' that come with the steak..the silly marker, restaurants sometimes give you..that say 'medium rare', and 'well done'...and noticed that the one next to MY plate said:
'well done'.

By then, my buddy had eaten 3/4 of his steak, and was almost finished with their side dishes...without any 'complaints'.

In fact...they had a very content *look* on their face.


I just *stared*.

Here was someone, who had previously refused to EVER order steak, cooked in any way, except 'well done'..

Why ?

Because they claimed that it's a fact, that ALL restaurants, undercook their steaks.


You know...

If I hadn't stopped eating..and *stared*..they would not have noticed anything was even going on..

AND...

If that silly steak 'marker', wasn't beside our dishes...I wouldn't have been able to 'convince' them..about what just occurred...how they had just gobbled down, a steak cooked 'medium rare', without blinking..for the first time in their life...and they were 'happy' while doing so.

They are someone that constantly needs 'evidence' (and they irritate the hades, out of me for doing this, on a personal level) so in giving them their 'evidence' (the silly food 'marker')...it left them with their
'mouth wide open'. :)


Of course, me being a smart aleck at times, I had to tell them:

'It's not flattering to look too surprised', and told them to close their mouth.

Many of the questions and yes even the flames arise due to being programmed to black and white as the material being all that is accepted as real evidence when in reality the concept of evidence is not really material. So many stuck on a concept of there being one right and all wrong when in RRReality no such concept exist there just simply is.

As the early sparse web is driven to become less sparse - so will its information content increase. Information == Energy.

This is a great example of the effort sometimes necessary to yank something sensible out of 13-space and express it in 4-space. It’s also a great example of the ‘marble under a blanket’ principle: you don’t get rid of a problem just by rolling it to a different place.

This quote addresses quite a few of the basic concepts of our work, but winds up curving off into space in two areas. Looking at those tells you where the author failed to cut himself loose from 4-space; the invisible ‘lines’ tying him to those anchor points are yanking his conceptual scheme all out of whack every time he tries to get it off the ground.

It isn’t often necessary (or ever prudent, if alternatives are available) to invoke mysterious elements in a new theory. You’re left with the additional task of justifying those elements before the theory proper can be addressed.

So if you find yourself going down that route, expect a delay. That’s what took us so long, and like the marble under the blanket, there’s no way to avoid the problem; eventually, you have to lift the blanket and look at what’s going on underneath.

We won’t pick on details, but here’s an example: consider the phrase ‘multitudinal facts of consciousness’. There’s no standard background for the concept the phrase suggests, which means the author has implicitly taken on the task of providing the support necessary if we’re to trust the concepts that in turn rely on this idea.

Everything in the quoted passage can be addressed with the introduction of only a minimum of novel concepts by carefully applying the existing, well-established understanding of the human brain to the analysis of ordinary communication.

For the most part, the mysterious levels of communication the author addresses are just descriptions of what we all do, all the time. None of it addresses something outside the box, that we could label (for example) telepathy.

But the point of view is distorted by the assumption that RRReality is where we’re all sitting, discussing this. So the edge curls, in this case to accommodate the impression that something unusual is being described. Try re-reading it without that anchor; he’s just describing ordinary, everyday human communication.

It requires a bit of effort and time, but all of this can be explained in a perfectly simple way, without requiring any new principles or physical properties, no novel physics, and especially nothing that supposes new kinds of energy or unexplored states of consciousness.

We do have interesting states of consciousness to explore, but this time around they’re really just old ones, which we’ve sort of forgotten. We get to experience them with new tools, and the accompanying new perspective. But they aren’t new, and you’re going to recognize most of what you see there.

Back to the garden, and all that; it’s real, and doesn’t require any new science to understand. All we need is the usual kind of extension of what we’ve already established, something that would make the scientific community completely comfortable if it weren’t for the fact it’s also associated with a speciation event.

But that, too, is just standard scientific stuff…

Right, and look at how language warps your expression of the idea, despite. Truth is, in RRReality, no concept exists, and there is no meaning. No patterns exist, either; they only arise through a process of observation, and we could probably devise a neat Feynmanesque diagramming method to graphically represent it.

It’s interesting to note how that idea, passed back over the evolution of pretty much everything, tears the assumptions away from the concept of ‘observation’. Any system that generates patterns as a result of interaction with RRReality qualifies as an observer, which of course includes non-biological systems like the solar system and the Universe itself.

If we really want to understand something that seems mysterious on the face of it we need to first go back and dig out all the underlying assumptions. Then we start all over again with what we already know and make sure the new thing really is mysterious before we pile any new assumptions on and make it even more so.

We should have out a bit more emphasis on the fact that the author Tammy quoted actually is starting with something ‘sensible in 13-space’.

In other words, he’s describing something real, that he and others can perceive in a way that allows them to formulate various attempts to address it.

So what’s ‘wrong’ with this particular attempt isn’t the perception that there’s something there to describe, nor the basic view that gives rise to it. It’s real stuff, the same stuff we’ve been noodling about quite a bit here in the forums.

What’s missing is the sense that the formulation isn’t optimum, that there are probably unseen elements messing with the fundamental elegance of their description of that view.

That suggests a kind of general theory of how elegance arises, expressed in the context of the way explanations are viewed in the web. In that sense, the problem is that there’s an inconsistent application of metarelationships in the author’s view and his attempt to communicate it.

A general application of metarelationships would make the state of his models (i.e., how well optimized they are) an integral part of the view itself. Since the descriptions lack a sense of that integral monitoring process, we immediately know to look for several kinds of inconsistency, including the one we brushed over in the original post.

That’s not the case; because of the nature of patterns, there probably isn’t any way to generate ‘just plain wrong’ explanations from any honest attempt, and probably not from dishonest efforts, either.
