LOL! I think all dogs have ADD. . . my friend's dog will be getting ready to do his business . . . then he sees a squirrel and starts chasing it . . . then sees a truck going down the road and starts chasing that . . . then sees another dog and starts chasing it . . . then gets this look like "What was I doing again?" and then goes and rolls around in the grass.

dogs can be hunters or gatherers -
The ADD book by Hartmann has something like that for its title -
Don't know anything about the book -
knowledgeable others here however write positively about it.

My dog just had her third $5,000 operation in three years. I just came from the doctor because I hurt my back deadlifting. Regardless of my pain, I have to haul my dog's carcass up and down the stairs for the next two weeks while she convalesces. @$#!@#!

Sargon,

I think you deserve an award. You must be a very dedicated pet lover.

In one sense... the dog's behavior isn't often considered detrimental to a dog's survival (typical medical line (pun intended) of thinking for disorders).

In another sense, many dogs do have the symptoms, but some don't. I guess it does have inheritability (some breeds are more predisposed than others). Some dogs are playful in a very controlled manner (Akitas) whereas others.... can exhibit a host of annoying behavior, from jumping, licking, biting, and urinating in places that are not meant for such (such as on your leg). Dogs tend to have ADD, ODD, or even ASPD or BPD (borderline). Cats seem to be more autistic, but inattentive ADD is quite possible in this case.

I am sure that dogs can have most of the same illnesses that human's have. However, I wonder how on Earth a Vet would be able to diagnose ADHD in a dog?

Yes, I've read that dogs can have adhd, and there is such a thing as doggie ritalin. :p

I knew there was a model for animals with ADHD, my mother, a psychiatrist who has a cat on prozac I might add, said that was bogus.

From what I'm reading on the internet vets are sometimes giving hyperkinetic dogs ritalin or dexadrine to slow them down.

lol I've never heard of a cat on prozac...but here is one!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=432375&in_page_id=1770

apparently cats are prone to depression and ocd, and prozac helps them a bit.

That's funny you asked this cause I was joking a couple of weeks ago about this ! After working in a vets office my answer is YES ! I think sometimes cats too and I think cats can be bipolar.........uh thats another topic :p

I guess cats sometimes have bipolar disorder. I've found a reference to kitty antipsychotics to treat feline bipolar....

http://pharmagiles.blogspot.com/2007/04/pet-sounds.html

Here is a cat with some mood instability... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J2TohkHWMY&mode=related&search=

I once had a cat that was possibly bipolar. Happy one moment, and then raging the next.... (poor kitty)

In any case, I guess the point is that animals can have the same neurobiological conditions that people often have.

I think it is in their nature to be ADHD!

Yes, my son had a rat terrier who was the most hyper dog I've ever seen in my life. He was running , jumping and bouncing everywhere continuously. If he was not doing those things he was sleeping.

My Rottweiler will chew one toy, see another, chew on that one and go through this until he has chewed all his toys. In the middle of all that, he is also playing with the cat, watching what I am doing, and listening for the words "outside" and "hungry". Talk about multitasking!
