View Full Version : How does ADD affect your ability to play video games?
D.Lerious 02-04-04, 12:20 AM Games where I have to do the same things over and over again bore me(ie Mariobros games). However, I make an exception for Pacman, Mrs Pacman, and Frogger.
Strategy games- I read the least amount I can from the manuels.
Word games: I'm pretty good at these, as I love to read.
Trivia-bleh I suck at details.
computer racing games- I like those :)
Hubby brought a PS2 home from saudi in 2002 for xmas. We dont have many games but of the ones we do, Grand turrismo and Pacworld and Finding nemo are my favourites.
I dont allow myself to play them anymore though. My son finds some of the moves tricky and i will help him with them, but no way do i just play the games.
8 hours straight is my record for playing Grand Turismo, boy was i sore when i finally gave up and switched it off.
I have a serious competitive problem though, i just have to win. If i cant get past a certain place in a game i will try and try untill i do.
So all in all Video games are not a good idea for me.
I love word games though. I had a primary school teacher who brought in word boxes. A 3 by 3 square with 9 letters. The idea was that there was a 9 leter word in the box that you could make with each letter touching as well as any number of smaller words. He had a prize for whoever got the 9 leter word and one for the person who got the most words as well. I got banned in the end as i used to litterally sit a work on it all break and lunch for the whole two days we had, as well as at home, till i was sure i had the most. After winning both prizes every week for a whole term i was banned from the competition to give others a chance.
I think a combination of hyperfocus and a driving need to win are not good when it comes to video games, or infact most games and puzzles.
D.Lerious 02-04-04, 03:12 AM hyperfocus is an issue with me too when it comes to computer games or any other of my hobbies. I've found myself playing computer games for like 5 hrs straight!!
fasttalkingmom 02-04-04, 10:26 AM I can not play Video. Worst, I can't stand watching others do it. For me, so much is going on I can't focus and I get very bored....
waywardclam 02-04-04, 10:31 AM I can't get into competitive games where I have too much of a learning curve to overcome... where I really notice this is in real time strategy games. I want the game to SLOWWWW down so I can manage every little bit, and it drives me NUTS if things are going to fast for me.
A game like Civilization I could (and would) play for 24 hours straight. I wonder what the world record is? I think my personal record would be about 12 or 14 hours.

My husband says he is like this. And once he delves into a strategy video game, he'll play it until he's beat the game, even if it means several nights of being up till 4am. I don't quite understand the ability to hyperfocus, although at times I sure wish I could do that!
D.Lerious - Me too! I can play age of empires for 8 hours and just notice that its 3am in the morning!! Its almost like a time warp!!
I have to play only on the weekends for I was getting chronic fatigue due to lack of sleep!!
wlfbear27 02-04-04, 02:40 PM I am a game freak. I can play for hours and hours but it has to be a RPG or somthing that requires some thinking to get through my new ones right now are Americas Army, Flight simulator, and final fantasy tactics advanced. (Used to have a PS2 but had some hard times had to sel it but I got a great job now so I'll prolly get another hope my wife dosen't see this j/k :) )
Stranger 02-05-04, 12:48 PM I suck at video games--bad hand-eye coordination and an attention span that wanders off at the wrong moments (boom!).
But I will buy puzzle books at the grocery store and obsess over them until I finish them. I'm good at board games--never lost at Trivial Pursuit, and my wife won't play Monopoly with me anymore.
waywardclam 02-05-04, 04:17 PM LOL my wife only ever played Monopoly with me once, and has refused to ever since. She says I take the game too seriously. :( :D
Nucking_Futs 02-05-04, 04:56 PM I tend to hyperfocus to the point of insanity. I have to play a new game until I win then I can walk away.
I'm the girl at the arcade you laugh at that jumps up and down screamin and yelling, arms jerking, legs kicking while playing games as if by some miracle this is going to help me win.
Board games are hard for me; first it's the whole sitting there thing (sitting still longer then 5 minutes IMPOSSIBLE)
I'm also the one yelling best two out of three, best three out of five and then I get mad when I win and the challenger won't just walk away like a good little loser. lmao
aforceforgood 02-05-04, 05:26 PM heh, yeah, videogames are a terrible idea for me, too. But I just couldn't resist the dreamcast I found at a garage sale for $10. Now if I could just find some cool games to play on it....
I usually don't let myself have videogames because I tend to spend waaaay too much time on them, and at the end of that time, what do you have to show for it? Nothing.
I used to call my nintendo my electronic time waster.
adderallboy 02-05-04, 06:20 PM When i take my meds, im a video game god
when i dont, i suck at them
waywardclam 02-06-04, 03:01 AM Well I just spent 5 hours playing Civilization and I am miffed at myself. If I am going to miss that much sleep, I should at least be writing.

Gee, I don't suppose you understand that the OPPOSITE would be true if you really had ADD?
FlakeyGirl 02-06-04, 11:46 AM LOL, futs....best two out of three...that is out family motto, I think it is in Latin on a crest somewhere!
Nucking_Futs 02-06-04, 11:50 AM Hubby say's when I die they are going to drag me thru the Pearly Gates kicking and screaming, yelling "Give me another chance God, Best two out of three." lol scarry thing is he's probably right.
I'm a vididiot (video Idiot). I spend way to much time playing RPG games. Whether it be on the computer as in (Runescape) or on the consoles that we have. Hubby & Boogiebutt are the same way. It is our source of entertainment. Although I do tend to hyper focus on them way to much at times as do the other 2. It's a wonder we get anything done around here. LOL

That was YOU?? lol :D

I used to play in chess tournaments--I could never sit still at the board like everybody else, but would wander around the room, checking out everyone else's games except my own.

I found rogue spear and tetris for the Dream cast while we were moving thought I got rid of those a long time ago. lol
wlfbear27 02-08-04, 04:45 PM I am also pretty good at Chess and trivial pusuit. I have a great mind just can't keep it staight and slow moving long enough to get super good at things:confused:
Stranger 02-09-04, 12:02 PM Me, too.
Games I don't care so much for. Puzzles I like, or games that involve strategy and solving puzzles, like Myst. I also like chess although I gotta get 'into the zone' first, otherwise my opponent usually falls off the chair laughing at my stupid mistakes (not to good when my usual opponent is my boyfriend, LOL, he swears I'll never beat him, but just you wait!)
amyschue 02-25-04, 01:11 PM I am great at stratagy games.. like any of the final Fantasy games.. but put like pac man inf front of me and i get bored..
