View Full Version : Sleepy during mental work?
shakepurmake 10-14-07, 06:22 PM Does drowsiness a factor in having ADD?
Suppose a person was well rested and had around 9 hours of good sleep. When it comes time for him/her to read, do homework, he or she ends up all drowsy, barely able to keep his or her eyes open.
Is this part of ADD or is it part of something else? My neurologist told me that I should get more rest in order to prevent my ADD symptoms but quite frankly, even after 8-12 hours of sleep, I still end up being dysfunctional and hopeless.

QueensU_girl 10-14-07, 09:04 PM Are you fatigued in low interest or high interest subjects? OR both?
Oh, and have you ever had an injury to your head? (car accident, fall, blow, sport injury, etc)

Norwegianwood 10-14-07, 11:00 PM I have ADD and my most significant symptom is fatigue. I mean, to the point where if there is anything I need to concentrate on I'll fall asleep...homework, class, chores, cleaning, reading etc.
meadd823 10-14-07, 11:51 PM This is only a theory so please read it as such
Boredom due to lack of interest in the activity causes a sleepy feeling. You feel sleepy because the activity doesn't provide enough stimulation.
ADD = boredom aversion
ADHDGrl 10-15-07, 09:18 AM Hi! The brain wave studies that they have done on ADHD suggest that being sleepy would be a common response. 1991 they did an EEG study that found that a person with ADHD operates mainly in a beta brain wave pattern. This page is actually about meditation as an alternative treatment fo ADHD but you may find it interesting! http://www.adhdanswers.info/ADHDMeditationWorks.html
PinkBeauty 10-15-07, 10:06 AM Its funnyt cos I remember that I used to notice that when I went to visit certain people (elderly relatives etc) I would feel really tired when I was there like I just wanted to go to sleep and I used to associate that feeling with their house etc because it happened everytime I went there and I guess that's why. I would have a job to stay alert while they were talking to me.
ADHDGrl 10-15-07, 01:25 PM Some people have that effect on me too!
:)

Yes it is a part of ADD, and I am living proof of it. When I was undiagnosed, any kind of activity that required deep concentration would make me super drowsy. Doesn't matter how many hours of sleep I got, how emotionally adjusted I was, etc. I'd go to the library and within a matter of minutes, I'd be dead asleep. I also had a tendency to fall asleep on buses and subways too.
Then when I took my medication, wham-o! I was not only awake for much longer, but anything I was trying to learn would stick in my head.
Do not feel hopeless or discouraged in anyway. It is a part of the ADD, and totally treatable.
If I am doing schoolwork thats boring then I either just can't concentrate and go off and do something more interesting or I just sit there quiet and want to fall asleep. Either way nothing gets done :D
I get very sleepy when I have to concentrate too. I just woke up from the impromptu nap that I just took at my desk at work. Luckily, no one noticed. :p
estatic someone else posted about this. I am freaking out lately trying to figure out why I am so tired all the time (it seems between work and school). Also I just posted another thread stating I get really tired from caffiene...I never even hit the high and go right to the crash (same thing with Adderall XR).
Cindylouwhoo 11-03-07, 12:16 PM wow yeah. i can totally relate. i just thought i was weird (i'm in the process of getting treatment for ADD).
i would be reading in class, and all of a sudden i would get SO SLEEPY, to the point of not being able to function properly or get anything done, and it never really mattered how much sleep i had the night before. i thought i just wasnt a morning person, so i switched to afternoon classes and the same thing would happen. or i would be reading a book and i just couldnt keep my eyes open. i failed many college classes because of this....
it also happens to me at peoples houses sometimes, we go to visit, and BAM, in the middle of everyone talking and sitting around, i just want to doze off.
glad to know its treatable
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS TOPIC
kilted_scotsman 11-03-07, 12:27 PM Yup....suddenly get seriously drowsy. Dead on about people triggering it too....like the in-laws.
I can never last more than 30 mins in their presence before wanting to go and lie down.

I always feel like I am going to fall asleep when I am reading. Thought it was normal since a lot of people read before going to bed at night. Maybe it isn't normal.
First of all props to Adhdgrl who sent me on an hour learning frenzy about transendental meditation :)
I just wanted to say that too much sleep has often made me sleepy throughout the day. 8 hours a day is plenty. So watch out for that. Also i envy all you who become sleepy when bored with something. My energy just gets directed somewhere else and if im forced to remain in one place i get angry :P I have extreme troubles falling asleep. I haven't found the off button to my brain yet.
4gotAgain 11-04-07, 02:27 AM i always do that, i skip to easier things before doing the harder things.
Yep, reading a book or doing any kind of homework would put me right to sleep or make me so drousy I could no longer work.
Yes, anything boring at work puts me out.. Got to love the internet, better than coffee!
