Hi guys!
I haven't been here in a while but I finially got back on Ritilain. I started my very low dose yesterday. Yesterday, not very long after I took the med I got an Aura. I get these auras every now and then even when I'm not on meds.
(An aura is a very weird euphoric feeling and sometimes you blackout just for a moment.) An aura is basically an awakened partial seizure. I have had several full blown seziures in the past. I blacked out yesterday and the aura starts out as a weird dejavu feeling... following by a weird euphoric feeling...then you blackout. I forgot what I did around the house before this aura. Very odd!
Now, I didn't mention I had seizures or auras to the doctor yesterday. Can I still take the Ritilian if i have gotten seizures in the past?? You can medicate seziures with a med called Tegratol. I don't want him taking me off the Ritilian just because I've had seziures in the past!! I also want to be able to swtich to Adderall if the Ritilian doesn't work for me!!
Does anyone suffer from auras or seziures and you can still safley take your ADD meds along with your seziure meds???
I don't want to have to go off my ADD drugs because I've had several seziures!!! Unemployment is sending me to a training course late this month and I'm going to need to concentrate!!
Please let me know...
Thank you, cyberspacestar

For some people, the stimulants do decrease seizure threshold, and therefore some doctors are hesitant to prescribe them to those who have had seizures in the past. I would let the doctor know about your reaction (but (s)he may take you off the stimulant). I don't know about combining the seizure drugs and stimulants. Good luck!

Hi Cyberspacestar
I hope things are working out for you.
Building a relationship with a doctor requires a large amount of trust on both sides. If oyu have had several seizures in the past these would probably be mentioned in your medical records and he may already know of them.
If they're not in there, or the doctor didn't notice them then really he should be told as if the medications he prescribes are contra-indicated for patients with a history of seizures there is a reason for that. There may well be other drugs with are OK to prescribe to those with seizures.
You could have a full blown seizure at a dangerous time (eg driving, deep fat frying), then you (and possibly others) are injured and its the doctor thats getting sued big style.

I don't want to go off Ritilian or not get perscribed Adderall in the furture JUST because of seziures!!
I have a training course coming up and I want to concentrate to pass! I only get one shot at this training staring Oct 29th!!
Actually, I didn't give him my past records of treatment. He asked for them but I said I don't remember my past doctors.
I need an ADD med to function and I ALMOST don't want to tell him i get auras or seziures for the fear he will discontinue ADD meds!! I haven't had a full blown seziure in a few years! But I had a partial seziure (aura) yesterday.
Is Aderall better with someone who has seziures compared to Ritilian?
You should have talked to your doctor about your epilepsy before starting ADHD meds.
All Stimulants lower your seizure threshold and can cause problems if you are epileptic. You really don't want to be taking adderall, ritalin, dexadrine, etc... if you have epilepsy.
There are meds that are better suited to your condition than stimulants. Also treating the epilepsy might be the thing to do at this point. Talk to your doctor.
You need to be really careful, the last thing you need is to end up with a grand mal seizure(s) or status epilepticus just because you wanted to try stimulants for your adhd.
Is your epilepsy being treated ? Did you know that complex partial seizures will cause long lasting symptoms that are very much like ADHD ?
see your doctor right away.

Hey, thanks for responding... :)
See, I've had like 2 seizures in the past but I have not been diagnosed with Epilepsy....
Just because you have a seizure, does that mean your 'automatically' an Epileptic??
At the time I was smoking alot of weed when i had those seizures. Now I don't do any drugs or drink. I had an 'aura' the other day... but I also had an aura when I was NOT on Ritilan.
I totally want to stay on Ritilain or try Aderall. Ritilain workerd for me in the past... BUT NOT those non stimulants like Straterra.
Do you think if i tell my doc I've had seizures in the past he will not want to perscribe me Ritilan or Aderall?

I think 2 or more unexplained seizures may qualify as epilepsy. . . not sure. You may want to check out the EFA website for definitions of seizures: http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/about/
I may be wrong, but I didn't think that a seizure that causes you to black out is considered an aura (simple partial). Loss of consciousness (however brief) is associated with complex partials.
I would again strongly encourage you to speak honestly with your doctor. He may well not want you on a stimulant if you've had seizures; There are studies that have looked specifically at the effects of ritalin on people with epilepsy which have not found increases in seizures.
That said, reactions to drugs are very individual, and I would be concerned if you find yourself experiencing more seizure-like symptoms after starting the drug.
Another thing to do may be to keep a log of when you have your auras and/or seizures, and how many you have. Do they happen at a certain time after taking the drugs?
I hate ADHD and i have taking ritilian because it makes me full a sleep and fell sick.
Sid, you could talk to your doctor about switching to a different med- maybe Adderal or Strattera? Not all medications work for everyone.
