My 6 y.o. DD has an oral fixation. She chews on everything. Some kids with ADD tap a finger, tap their foot, have some repetitive behavior that helps them focus. My daughter chews on anything that will fit in her mouth. We allow her to chew gum at home. Any suggestions on what she can chew on at school since gum is not allowed? I know this is an odd request but I am trying to help my little girl out. She was hyperfocused at school one day that she didn't noticed that she chewed on her thumb until it bled. We have talked to the dr. and at this time doesn't believe this is an indication of another problem. Thanks taking the time to make suggestions.

Maybe you could talk to the teacher, and tell him/her that chewing gum helps your daughter focus. Maybe s/he'll make an exception?

That or you could somehow get her to stop chewing on things, and find something else to do while focusing.

Have you ever seen the abilitations catalog?

I don't know if links are allowed, but you can google it, along with sensory integration disorder and you should find it.
They sell "chew toys" that would probably be ok in school, esp if you talk to the teacher and explain to her what they are.
We homeschool our "chewer", but we don't allow gum either (gets in the carpet), but she has several "chewys" she can bring to the table when she needs to focus.
