View Full Version : An Apology
Matt S. 10-17-07, 12:39 PM I don't know if anyone was online yesterday but I picked an avatar that was rather inappropriate (it was an obese woman and I thought she was wearing a bikini but I am not totally sure)
I was attempting to be funny and it was rude, disgusting and inappropriate and I apologize if I offended anyone on this site with the avatar, as most people can tell I try to integrate some humor into my avatars and that one crossed the line whether she was wearing a bikini or not.
I am sorry for my behavior and I will keep the funny at funny and not disgusting.
Matt
EYEFORGOT 10-17-07, 12:46 PM Thank you Matt.
I didn't see it, but we all make mistakes. Thank you for being so understanding to fix it.
KittenPoker 10-17-07, 01:52 PM Crap, I missed it. BUt I'm a sick puppy anyway...
Matt S. 10-17-07, 04:01 PM Yeah I don't even want to think about it, it was that nasty...
QueensU_girl 10-17-07, 04:14 PM I think that things like obesity and invisible disabilities (like ADHD or LDs or hearing issues or chronic pain, etc), can be easy to trivialize and make fun of.
Not accepting people b/c of their size or looks is pretty much the last bastion of acceptable discrimination.
However, the IRONY in all this is that the obese are the fastest growing segment of society. I think I recently read that 50%+ of people are overweight in the USA, and 30%+ are obese. (Not sure of the overlap between those two categories. Overweight is a 'BMI of 25-30'. Obese is a 'BMI over 30'.)
Making fun of the overweight/obese might mean the fun-poker is rather outnumbered, or soon will be!
Severe obesity also seems to have some sad links to even bigger problems.

Matt S. 10-17-07, 04:18 PM I was obese at 15 for awhile and almost died from anorexia two years later so I should really know better
Crazy~Feet 10-17-07, 04:40 PM It takes guts to publicly admit you made a mistake. The avatar was just that: an impulsive mistake, and apologizing is the mature, responsible thing to do. I myself have impusively posted some unacceptable graphics here while hypomanic; I thought they were funny at the time.
You deserve credit for making a sincere apology, and I'll remind you of something else too: This is not the first time you admitted you had been wrong and apologized. Remember? If you don't, I certainly do :) because your apology was accepted and the event has been placed in the past where it belongs.
I tried to find that post, and guess what? Your last 500 posts have been very positive indeed. There are so many where you have reached out and supported others among those 500, and plenty where you are just hanging out, and enjoying the company of your fellow members. That's quite nice, isn't it?
Don't hang onto this mistake, we all make them. Take the positive and let the rest go.

Well said, Crazy~Feet, you took the words right out of my mouth, Honey, :D and mspen1018, you are to be commended for your integrity and fortitude to publicly apologize. Proud of ya'!!!! ;) :D :D :D :D
I agree with C~F. It does take a lot to admit you messed up and apologize :) Don't lose that quality.
I didn't see it but sorry I missed it now! It is ok to make mistakes, those of us with ADHD/ADD make them all the time...whether they want to admit it or not. Inappropriate is my middle name for crying out loud.
FrazzleDazzle 10-17-07, 09:32 PM Matt, you are so cool! :-)

VisualImagery 10-18-07, 01:52 AM Hey mspen, we know where your heart is--and that it is big and generous. Focus on all the good stuff and go forward, it is easy to make mistakes, but all of us here have done the same and appreciate your integrity. The past is past, go forward with a smile and know we are glad you are here with us. If I counted my mistakes......just on the forum......yikes, but to err is human,
luv ya!
meadd823 10-18-07, 01:55 AM Wow a very mature thing to do = taking responsibility for ones actions and the possible offense it may have caused. I am impressed more people should do what you just did. Thanks
justhope 10-18-07, 07:03 PM Exactly what my sis said, Matt!
I have done some regretable things here as well. Mostly I do them in real life...the dreaded :foot: ...
Just like I tell you over and over again in our little BP world...
your honesty is refreshing and a quality more should have..including myself.
Don't ever forget how great having that quality is, here or anywhere else. You will probably never know what a positive impact you have on others for being you.
Now don't stay in the regret long, cycling brother. We are all human here..and since most of us have at least ADD here and those of us who are really special :eyebrow: have other fun stuff.....Let the first one who is without ~you know~ cast the first stone and all that....
No worries, on to happier stuff now....
Always proud to have you apart of the Cycling Team!
Big Bossy Sis...out!
Matt S. 10-19-07, 11:10 AM I try to be mature contrary to my signature and avatar

lunaslobo 10-19-07, 03:33 PM I try to be mature contrary to my signature and avatarthere is a big difference of being mature and respecting others feelings and being a kid at heart. you have a different sence of humor than some, that does not mean to me at least you are not a good person. there are ways we have to be grown up and there are ways we should never grow up. you are fine, the apology says it all.
inquisitive 10-20-07, 02:49 AM i read your apology, and all the replies of support and acceptance. i think that not only is it a brave thing to recognise and accept responsibilty for what you have done, but to publicly make an apology. i think that the people who have replied to you and graciously supported you and acknowledged your apology also deserve a pat on the back. online communities are great this way, if only real life was as comforting, i think we'd have more people being courageous enough to comfortably accept their mistakes and be proud to show maturity in apologising.
absolutroot 10-20-07, 02:51 AM gah, now i want to see the avatar! i demand an apology for your apology!... the neverending cycle begins....
