View Full Version : Motivation Ideas...
randomthoughts 10-17-07, 10:27 PM Just curious what some ideas are for staying on task, accomplishing goals in your life, etc? Giving your life the structure it needs and then following that structure?
For example, thinking about really REALLY thinking about my goals in life, where I want to be, putting it down on hard copy where I can see it everyday.
randomthoughts 10-17-07, 11:07 PM Also, anyone who has good example of books written by people who have overcome illness, the darker/deeper the problems the better, I'd be interested in reading. Should be good inspiration.

KittenPoker 10-18-07, 12:28 PM You really need to check out the Hallowell/Ratey books, "Driven to Distraction" and the two follow-ups. I think they're are a must-have for any ADD library. They've give you some great anecdotal evidence and coping strategies to get through every day life.
Motivation, eh? To stay on task I have to make short To-Do lists, two-four action items. Once I cross them all off I feel as though I've accomplished something.
Goals in life...you mean I'm supposed to have goals? I never got the memo...
merlin8015 10-18-07, 02:01 PM I would agree with kittenpoker, Driven to Distraction and the follow ups are great books to read. Also Add friendly ways to organize is a great book to as its not just about organizing your living or working space but your life too. Lots of trick and tips. My main tip is "do it now or write it down" I don't have a pen and paper handy most of the time so i just get the task done :-) most of the time that is.
I have reminder alarms on my cell phone for the time of day. To help me stay on task, now I have all my items done before the alarm goes off. Which makes me feel good because I can say "That's already done."
I also have a daily action plan and a weekly action plan on a white board in my office. Weekly action plan includes, Laundry day, house cleaning days, food shopping days, paperwork/bills day, etc. Daily action plan is Wake, Meds, breakfast, check to-do list, meal prep, dinner clean up, next day prep.
At the end of the day i go through my list of things that I needed to accomplish and see if i missed anything if so it goes to the next days plan or i get it done then and there. I also look at the next days plan and get everything ready for the next day. Since the morning prep takes so little time I don't want to forget anything so i put things i need for the next day all togeather. And errand box or container (mail, shopping list, dry cleaning, etc.)
I make a list and try to stick with it. I number the items on the list in order of importance. Lists are not easy for the ADHDer but I make myself do them. It works...most of the time.
KittenPoker 10-18-07, 06:57 PM ANother thing I'm going to do for organization is get baskets for the bookcase. It becomes a disaster area with receipts, keys, loose change, and other junk. So Mr. KP and I will have our own baskets. IF we don't put our stuff in there, it's our own fauls.
Also, I asked him to install a power strip in the bookcase. That way we can have our phone chargers all plugged in in one place. When a phone, Treo, iPod is done charging we can turn off the strip. That way we're not rummaging for chargers.
Once this flooring is done my house is gonna be (semi) organized, w00t! It has been cleansing though...we donated a bunch of stuff and had a garage sale in September. We got rid of an extra couch, old computer, etc, and made over $200. Not to shabby!
Oh! So if you can go through stuff a bit at a time (drawers, cabinets, etc) and get rid of things you no longer use, go for it. Trust me; you will feel so good when you haul 5 bags of clothing to Goodwill!
ADHDGrl 10-18-07, 10:08 PM I treat everything like a challenge or game! I make a to-do list then I write how long it should take next to each item on the list. When I start that Item I set a timer and try to beat the clock! It works better when I reward myself with a treat for the time I save, like a manicure or ice cream or something! The key is to make sure that you are realistic with the time you give yourself, but not to give yourself too much time! For small tasks a kitchen timer works great for tasks that take longer I program my watch!
