I started my 10 year old son on concerta this morning. I was going to wait til the weekend, but the anticipation was causing anxiety for both of us. I know that it is fast acting, but I don't know if I should make an immediate judgement. When he got home from school, he said he felt ok, (except for nausea), but he seemed very tense and wired. His jaw was clenched, and he was snapping his finger incessently and licked his lips. He also claimed to have had a song in his head all day that he couldn't get out. He began to do chores, but in a very fast and disorganized way. He claimed that he could not stop cleaning, (which is soooo not him). He stated that his behavior in school was worse today, and that he got in trouble for talking too much. He was very loving and huggy, (more than usual), but all in all, he was as if not more hyper than usual. At the end of the day he was loud and mouthy,(more than usual). Needless to say, this was not the effect that I was anticipating. I don't know if I can watch this for another day. The Dr. said to call after 5 days to report on the effect. I wondering if anybody has had a similar experience. I don't know if I should stick with this for a little while, or look at changing med or dosage right away.

Also, insurance would not pay for the concerta. The co. said that he had to try generic ritalin first. The concerta was about $120. Does anybody know anything about the ritalin vs. the concerta. I would really appreciate any response.

The stimulant may have unmasked tics, which are also made worse with anxiety. He may also be having some rebound or increased anxiety from the stimulant. Call the doc to discuss options.

The different forms of methylphenidate can be different for a person, even though the only difference is the delivery mechanism. If you try another methylphenidate or other med, try to go with a generic or one that has a coupon for a free month.

Also, if you do not have insurance, most pharmaceutical companies have assistance:
