View Full Version : I want monster
Honeybunnie8 10-19-07, 04:38 PM I was wondering if other people have a problem with the "I want Monster". That nagging voice in your head that wants something untill you get it. Be it a certain food or clothing item or what ever.
I have this problem all the time. Ill decide I want something and I know I may not need it but I want it to much that I will kind of obsess untill I get it...That usualy includes researching, debating, researching....
Right now I want 300.00 Tiffany necklace, and while we could afford it, it still seems like a lot of money. This has been a want for about a month or longer now. I have almost broken down and bought it a few times but logic kicks in before I can grab my card. Its like a power struggle within myself.
Yes, It will go away if you proactively point out to yourself that do you not need it.
Today I almost bought a $175 35mm camera.... I wanted.... i NEEDED it... even though I already have 2 nice digital cameras.. but I NEEDED this one on ebay.... I had to get someone else to come and say.. YOU DONT NEED THIS. So yes.... yes I do get the "I want monster". :)
Ha ha ha. It's great to know I'm not alone on this. Frequently, it's something trivial in my case (i.e. yellow post-it notes). Even though I could use notebook or printer paper just as easily, the thought will sit in the back of my mind for a length of time. After holding out (i.e. 20 minutes) I rationalize that since I am not concentrating on the task at hand (i.e. studying pathology or immunology) it would be better to leave right then to buy more sticky notes. Upon returning from the store an hour later, I remember 10 or so other items I needed (if only I had sticky notes to write them down on)... back to the store.
Fortunately, this happens fairly rarely (on medication at least) & tends to involve small ticket item purchases that are useful but nonessential.
At other times I think it would be fun to go downtown. So, I ride the El downtown and wonder, "what now?" Fortunately, there are so many distractions downtown that I can always discover a new and exciting destination.
As you can see, I can certainly relate to the "I WANT monster."...
Speaking of which, I ran out of post-it notes.... :(
Ugh, I am horrible. My monster is ALWAYS around and won't shut up for anything. Most of the time I compramise and don't get the most expensive one of the item I am seeking. I get it, but don't spend as much.
Tylerlee17 10-19-07, 11:46 PM Yup I have one of those. Unfortunately mine tells me things like "I want a cigarette" or "I want a beer" etc. When it comes to things I might want to buy for fun god knows why I can go forever without them. While I'm not a chain smoker nor do I dip tobacco non stop, I can't stay away from it for more than 3 weeks at a time before I cave. I hate this *******.

LOL I so relate. I do not have problems with big things those I do pretty well at but it is the little things like post it notes that do me in. What is worse is to find the left over package from the previous pack I thought I had finished after I spent an hour getting a new package {and forgetting every thing else} .
Fraser_2468 10-20-07, 03:23 AM I sometimes get the "I want" monster, but I have never been one for buying cloths, its usually video games and junk food. lol
kilted_scotsman 10-20-07, 05:08 AM Oh yes....hardware stores are the worst.
Matt S. 10-20-07, 09:19 AM I have the "I want" monster to such an extent that I get obsessed with it.
~boots~ 10-20-07, 09:23 AM I have managed to kill the I WANT monster....maybe because I am over 40..LOL
KittenPoker 10-20-07, 09:45 AM Oh yeah...I'll get a bee up my butt for a number of things and that stupid Monster won't let up until I feed it. My Monster wants stuff like shoes, handbags, make-up. The handbags aren't cheap either; I want Coach!
Oddly enough, jewelry isn't the top of the list for me. I like it but I wear the same rings and watches because I don't want to think. I am putting the Coast breast cancer watch on my Christmas list; hello, it's pink!
shakepurmake 10-20-07, 03:37 PM For me, I have been somewhat convinced of ignoring my Monster after watching Fight Club. Kinda ties into one reason why I stopped working anyway. (I got so bored there that I eventually kept thinking depressive thoughts but thats not the point). "Buying sh** we don't need." is my motto.
At Heart 10-22-07, 05:58 PM I think that the I want Monster is not exclusive to ADHD...I wish I could find something to tame it for me also.
