My son has been on adderall xr for about 1.5 yrs. He is ADD non hyper. It seems now that his grades are up the school is more about his social skills. He's on the shy side normally but at school they tell me he is severly withdrawn. I know it's the medication because I've seen it myself. He doesn't take it on weekends or during the summer.

So the side effects are making him into a zombie. He's on 15mg. He'll be starting therapy this week to hopefully work it out. But I've seen him go into these stares at his book with his head down. He has these stares and then looks so upset but can't tell me what is the matter.

He doesn't have any learning disabilities. He was evaluated by the school. He has a high IQ.

Anyone else go thru this side effect? I try to compare it to my own use of amphetimines in the late 1970's. But I don't have ADD.

I'm trying to do the right thing for him for his focus problems but then it's causing another problem for him. 3rd grade is especially tough as kids are starting to branch out into clicks. He's isolated I feel.

If he's having that kind of reaction, I would thinkg that Adderall is not the right medication for him. Once someone is on the right meds, at the right dose, there shouldn't be issues like that. Have you talked to his doc about this?

Thanks for your reply. I've scheduled an appt with his neurologist for this Fri. (I was lucky to get a quick appt). My son won't swallow a pill that is why the dr first prescribed Adderall xr. It is in capsule form and can be put on a cracker with peanut butter. We'll have to keep trying til we get it right. Take Care.

Well depending on the medication you may still be able to do that. You can also look into Daytrana. It's an ADHD medication that is in patch form, and is long acting like Adderall and Concerta.
