Does anyone else here with ADD(hyper-focus type) get stuck on a simple single word? I will here a word and my mind will get stuck on it. I will say it to myself over and over and over again until the word no longer makes any since at all and has no meaning. For instence once I got caught on the word "ketchup" Until it had no meaning at all to me. It sounded forign to me. If I were to say something out loud about it to my DH, he will tell me as if I am crazy and give me a funny look that makes ME think I am crazy. So am I crazy or is this normal for a person with this type of ADD?

I do this from time to time..... mostly because I know that the outcome of the "exercise" will be that that word has no meaning and that fascinates me. I have NO idea what it means when people do this, OCD tendencies maybe? Anyhoo, I do it too on occasion.I'm doing it now... cat, cat, cat, cat, cat which makes me think of mspen's signature which makes me laugh every time i see it! LOL

IMHO that kind of obsessive overfocusing sounds more like OCD than ADHD.

In speaking I can get stuck on a word or parts of a word and repeat it several times (palalia) before I can get "unstuck". To a layman it sounds like stuttering....like a big fat c c c cat!

Ugh, happens to me all the time. Speedo is right, seems more like an OCD trait than an ADHD one. But, just because you do it doesn't mean you have OCD. You are not alone, I do it too.

Sometimes, but it's mostly whole phrases as opposed to single words, and it's more about obsession with ideas than exact phrases (for me anyway).

I do this more than single words, An exception would be if a word has a strange pronunciation - then I attribute it to trying to remember how to pronounce it.

I don't think the phase pieces are as bad because there is an idea behind those I can play with. The song pieces that get "stuck" make me want to bang my head and go AHHHHH.

I have had conversations with people my whole life about the way you can make a word sorta lose it's meaning if you say it out loud over and over.

BUT, i've never really talked about how my brain does this fairly regularly, although not incredibly often. Sometimes it happens with words from different languages; for instance i'm taking French right now and occasionally i'll get a phrase or word just stuck and it won't go away no matter what.

But i've got a great word to say over and over, it sounds funny and i like the meaning as well.
Yonder
yonder, yonder, yonder, yonder, yonder, yonder...yonder.

So yeah, you are not crazy or alone. Or at least not alone ;)

i have a problem with phrases and sequences the same way at the same time every day, it seems to metamorphasize itself into other patters and obsessions.

I am gonna have to do some research on OCD(at least I am thinking of doing it-just got to get around to doing it). I dont do the word thing all the time. Just sometimes. When I do it I feel like Im some kind of freak. I will also get stuck on other things too. Like before I posted this thread, I thought and thought and thought about what to say and how to word it. I did this over and over and over again. Its nice to know I am not the only one who does this.

I know what you mean by this. I do the same. It will get to the point where I am not even sure if it IS the correct spelling, even though it is. Dont ask me to spell a word either. I will start to think about it and no spelling will look right and then I cant do it. Even simple words. Makes me feel dumb sometimes. But if I dont think about it I just write it, I will spell it correct. I think I am a bit crazy.

i say things over and over if i dont get the meaning or prononciation right.
I speak two languages fluently, sometimes when im tired or hyper, i get the two mixed up. In my mind, when i think things over, I sometimes say one sentence using both languages. I usually do this if i think one language has a better definition of how i feel or what i think. its weird and hard to explain.
i also love repeating words that i think sound funny or expressions.

I do this with every word in the English language - except for the word "I" {oddly enough} The label I was given was dyslexia - mostly because all seven version will mean the same thing and I can't tell the difference.

I relate very well to this. Was in Turkey recently and talked a lot of Afrikaans with the crowd I was with, this helps with guys trying to sell you something. I was always so scared of talking in English as I naturally change from one lanuage to the other with out notising.
Fortunately I prefer to type in english. . . so julle kan maar gemaklik wees.

"i also love repeating words that i think sound funny or expressions."

Same here, though mostly in my head. Phrases and single words alike, never to the extent of bothering me though, I kind of enjoy it. Single words changing the inflection changes meaning, fun for me at least. Only time it bothers me really is when I have a hangover..
