Hi, wow you must both be new here since I was last on here.
It is great that there are some maori rangatahi on here. Im from New Zealand (Aotearoa) also. Im around 20% maori if u count the maori on both sides of my family. From the Ngai Tahu tribe and Ngati Whatua iwi tribes I learnt the basics of te reo maori at school and loved it. Since leaving school, I have carried on learning the language and now am on to the advanced course. Hopefully in a years time I will be qualified to be a fluent speaker.

I have a mate who is 1/16th maori and he says he is maori and votes in the maori elections etc. How much maori do u have to have in you to make you a maori?
In our culture its all our about tracing the ancestors and whakapapa. This mate of mine can trace back to a cheif..ages back kinda thing.
Alot of new zealanders have some maori in them and there is alot of intermarrying going on. I have mates that are half maori half chinese, half maori quater pakeha quater samoan, half inidan half maori etc. Ive only met these people since ive been in whangarei tho, in mi town it was just maoris. They also say that the average person who claims to be maori is actually only 46% maori. There are no true maori left. I am around probably 80% maori im pretty sure. I have some european way back on mi dads side but u cant go measuring every wife and husband and everything.
They also say that within the next 3 or 4 generations. A majority will claim maori ancestory. So much intermarrying going on esp between maori and pakeha..european.

Nowadays maori get scholarships, special savings schemes, job opening especially for them etc. So i guess alot would want to be maori..i dunno..
