Does anyone else find that the ad/hd symtoms come and go with mood?
I've been referred to a psychiatrist, appointment is on the 14th of november, but as the date is approaching sometimes i'm not sure if i should go or not.

When i am in a good mood i am fine, i feel like i can concentrate and like there is nothing wrong with me or if there is its not bad enough to go see anyone about.

But when i'm down its horrible, i'm all over the place, forgetting stuff, cant study no matter how hard i try. I even start getting a little bit dyslexic.

Its worse when i have pms too. Not only am i incredibly scattered, i turn into a she-devil, complete with pitchfork!

I'm just worried, because i feel like the more i read about ad/hd the more obvious my symptoms get. Maybe i am subconsciously doing these things because i have read them or something!! But then again it could be that i am only noticing it because i have read it.

hehe oh dear. i guess either way i have issues huh?

well, overanalyzing the situation won't help... BUT myself, I have some days when I am SO scattered, but on other days I do really well with fewer problems. BUT if this is a problem for you you ought to talk it over with your doctor. Maybe it is just depression, but having continual highs and lows kind of suggests bipolar disorder.

thanks, i've been looking at boyond blue and it does sound like i have bipolar disorder, type II i think. I wish the psychiatrist appointment was closer though!

What if the appointment day turns out to be a good day? he will laugh at me if i try and tell him i am depressed or whatever, because when i am in a good mood i am reallly good. Probably why my family thinks i am over reacting.

The doc is a professional and has probably dealt with this kind of thing many times, so I think that all you have to do is to be able to show up and tell your doc what it is that you are concerned about.

If you have ever had a dx of adhd , bipolar or anything you will want to bring records of that with you to give to the doc. If you have ever had a neuropsychological evaluation done bring a copy of the report so the doc can read it.

Your doc will might want to see your medical records and may want to have some tests run, like blood tests , etc, before proceeding with a formal diagnosis for anything.

yeah, I believe in fearing docs, you can say they are all professional and whatnot you like, didnt stop them from laughing in my face when I tried to tell them I was seriously depressed. How is that professional?

bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. In general it is characterized by changes in mood over time... up one day down the next....etc.

We have a subforum here on bipolar disorder.

and here is a link on the symptoms of bipolar

i got this from www.beyondblue.org.au (http://www.beyondblue.org.au)

Bipolar Disorder I
People with this type of bipolar disorder are more likely to experience mania for longer periods of time and experience psychotic symptoms. Refer to signs and symptoms (javascript:bLink('link_id%3D91.590','N','N','','' ,'','0','0','N');) of bipolar disorder for more information.

Bipolar Disorder II
People with this type of bipolar disorder do not experience psychotic symptoms and generally have episodes of mania that last for a short time e.g. hours or at most, a few days. Also refer to signs and symptoms (javascript:bLink('link_id%3D91.590','N','N','','' ,'','0','0','N');)of bipolar disorder for more information.

Inbetween experiencing mania and depression, there are usually times when a person feels like they're on an even keel. However, if the person remains untreated, they are more likely to feel up and down more often.

Some people with bipolar disorder have what are called 'mixed episodes' where they feel some of the signs and symptoms of both depression and mania. Moods can change very quickly for some people - feeling high, then low and high again, within a matter of days or even hours.

People with bipolar disorder can also experience what is called 'rapid cycling'. This occurs when a person has at least four changes in mood states in any one year i.e. moving between depression, mania and a mixed episode.

Sounds somewhat like my problems, but what am I supposed to compare with, I have been like that most of my life (the parts I can remember). Most of the requirements, or what to call them, seem to be comparing with a previous condition. What if a person never had a previous condition?

Been on anti depressants for 2 years now, they really ****ed me up and I can not wait to get back to my "normal" state of mind.... Being depressed. This limbo state is killing me. Up and down like a roller coaster and I feel like I would rather just be down because I know that when I am up it can only go one way...

I feel like I would like it more if every day were about the same, equally boring and poitless and without desire or energy to do stuff. Having energy and desire now and then just makes it so much more painful to not have it the rest of the time...

If your symptoms tend to come and go with mood, then yes I would suspect something else other than ADHD.

One thing that's good about ADHD, happy or sad it's always there! *lol*

I would go to the appointment because you never know what could also be going on. As speedo suggested depression or bipolar.

Bipolar: Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic-depressive illness, is a condition that affects more than two million Americans. People who have this illness tend to experience extreme mood swings, along with other specific symptoms and behaviors. These mood swings or "episodes" can take three forms: manic episodes, depressive episodes, or "mixed" episodes.

And how would bipolar present itself in a person that has shut of their emotions? Emotions are very rare for me, I live most my life in my head. I get hurt easily and my brain seems to answer that by going ice cold extremely quickly. I work really hard on keeping my emotions when I do have them because I dont believe life is worth living without them.

Some women say the symptoms alter or go up/down with their menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause too.

This is soo me! I can't concentrate worth cr@p the 2 weeks before my period and my memory dies, and I just feel soo slow and ditzy. There's definitely a moving target. Sometimes I think it's just the coping skills that go to pot during those weeks because I'm tired and cranky. It's like you normally give 110% to appear "normal," and when you add an extra factor (like PMS or stress), you don't have that extra 10% to give, so the brain just says "screw this!" and goes on vacation.
