View Full Version : dangerous driving (inattentive to the road)
Irishbarry 11-04-07, 05:41 PM just wondering if this ever happened to anyone else here?
I would be driving down the street, phone would ring, i'd answer, talk away for a while, then after hanging up, i would not remember driving during the conversation????????. (stopping at lights etc)
blueyeyore 11-04-07, 05:50 PM I do that all the time. It's like I go on auto pilot...I did run a stop sign one time while doing that though....I didn't hit anyone, but if they hadn't been paying attention I would have.
ninjanicole 11-04-07, 11:52 PM Haha all the time!! I put my uni lectures on CD's and listen to them in the car (they are all recorded and put on the net) and most of the time i have no idea how i got home from uni.. I know its dangerous but its the best way i learn stuff.. :P
QueensU_girl 11-05-07, 01:35 AM I"ve read that cell phone use while driving is as dangerous as driving impaired.
A human just can't work with their attention that divided. When attention is divided, something's got to give. And it won't be that cement light pole or bridge rail or sidewalk curb. :(
Here in Toronto, we had a dad and young child killed by a train (at a railroad crossing). A train takes a _few kilometers_ of track, in order to stop -- when doing 100 km/hr. They were passing the cell phone back and forth to talk to Mom. (Mom heard the accident.)
Both died.

If you must use your cell phone, pull over!!!
Get the "call display" feature on your cell phone (if you fear missing a call), and phone the # back after you park somewhere safely.
I honestly wish they'd ban their use while driving here in Canada (some US states have!). Too deadly.
Some stupid phone call isn't worth dying or crashing for...
skydreamer 11-05-07, 09:04 AM I have done this. I would be driving and so focused on my thoughts or talking to someone else (in the car with me, I NEVER talk on the cell and drive at the same time. Too many accidents happen while on the cell)that I would suddenly look around and not know where I was at or if I had passed my turn or exit.
Matt S. 11-05-07, 09:23 AM I am totally in understanding of the driving cell phone blackouts another danger for me is walking and talking on the cell phone, I manage to slam into telephone doors or another one is walking into doors that are locked, the double doors where one is locked.
blueyeyore 11-05-07, 09:56 AM Actually there was one time where I was just talking to the person in the passenger seat of my car and ran a redlight...I never saw it. He swears it was red. So then..he drives my car from where we were going back home and sideswips somebody...at least I didn't hit anybody lol
Happens to me all the time. Half the time I can't even remember the phone conversation!
HighFunctioning 11-05-07, 09:10 PM Fortunately, I have a tendency not to answer my cell phone in general. Well, I do, but I don't feel compelled to do so usually (though I tend to turn it on vibrate or turn the sound off completely, and then forget to turn it back on).
My husband won't take a chance with me. We have the onstar phone in our car that way it is hands free, it can still be distracting because you will be paying more attention to the conversation than the road.
Irishbarry 11-08-07, 06:54 AM I have done this. I would be driving and so focused on my thoughts or talking to someone else (in the car with me, I NEVER talk on the cell and drive at the same time. Too many accidents happen while on the cell)that I would suddenly look around and not know where I was at or if I had passed my turn or exit.Sorry, but i meant on hands free kit in car.

DeloresMelon 11-15-07, 03:41 PM And from this post we've all learned not to talk on a cell phone and drive... riiiiiight???
*everyone nod and say yes*
blueyeyore 11-15-07, 10:28 PM Noooooooooooo....actually I used to HAVE to talk on the phone and drive...otherwise I was bored senseless on my drive home at night. Not so anymore, as a matter of fact I'd rather be left alone lol my friends have too much drama And from this post we've all learned not to talk on a cell phone and drive... riiiiiight???
*everyone nod and say yes*
complexnatural 11-15-07, 11:03 PM I have enough trouble just concentrating on driving. I can't imagine talking on my cell at the same time!
I have trouble paying attention while I am driving because either my mind is racing or I am exhausted from my mind racing.
I have had 4 traffic accidents and the last one I changed lanes just past a busy intersection and it was so distracting, I sideswiped a gal and took her mirror off.
blueyeyore 11-15-07, 11:46 PM OI! I can say I have only been in one wreck, which technically it was just a tiny accident. I wasn't even on my cell phone either. My little saturn slid up underneath my friends SUV...I was onlly going about 7mph...good times.
i dont do cell phones, but i must have music on in the car. having music on helps me focus on the road. being able to divert some of my wandering mind to music keeps me from looking at billboards and such. but i drive like an old granny, so i guess im good to go anyways.
