I was wondering if anyone here self medicates on caffine?

I self medicate on pro plus tabs, usually about 500 - 1000mg

and they work quite well for me, they keep me quiet and focused for most of my working day :) but quite drowsy after work :(

anybody else who self medicates on caffeine?

I am also undiagnosed so I cant touch the REAL THING :(

You are messing with serious side effects on those kinds of doses. ie serious, constant dehydration due to vasopressin interactions that won't be helped by drinking more water. Go get a diagnosis, it's worth it man.

Well, caffeine can make you more calm. It works that way for me. Though I just drink Diet Coke.

Coffee suprisingly makes me more drowsy so I don't drink it often.

I used to self-medicate with Caffeine, before I got meds.

Coffee gave me the jitters and made me more anxious, so I stayed away. Black Tea, however, worked very well.

I also self-medicated with caffeine for many years before I even knew what ADHD was. Family and friends were blown away by how much caffeine I could ingest. Once I started the meds, I had zero desire for caffeine and did not miss it a even a little.

I have seen some studies that show that alone, (or in combination with ritalin) caffeine improves ADHD symptoms. It is not used because of the side-effects.

However, there are also plenty in the medical community that think caffeine itself, given high enough doses and extended use can itself cause ADHD like symptoms.

For me, I found both to be true. It helped for a long time, but finally it got the best of me and I ended up with symptoms that were much worse than when I started caffeine.

I hope you can be diagnosed and treated with conventional meds, it made a huge difference for me.

Been there, done that! I have inattentive ADHD (basically I'm HYPO-active instead of hyper-active) and self-medicated on everything from straight caffiene pills, energy drinks/shots, diet pills (hoodia, Dexatrim Max, etc). Energy drinks ARE addictive (at least they are to me) and on my Adderall 'holidays' I still get cravings.

Being treated with prescription stimulants (or other meds as your doctor deems appropriate), under medical supervision, is much better for your long-term health. I'm very health-conscious and was reluctant to take meds to treat my ADHD and severe depression. Actually, prescription stimulants, which are the most commonly prescribed meds for ADHD, and have been around for ages, are much safer over the long term than any form of self-medicating. And on top of that, they work MUCH better :).

Something I noticed with the caffine was that althrough i was calm and slower active on the outside (some said I look depressed) I feel an over feeling of euphoria on the inside.

Also after about 5 - 6 hours after taking the caffine pills, I feel quite jittery and hyper for about 30 minutes.

Is this normal?

Is this normal? :confused:When my meds wear off, I go through the same type of thing. When I first started on Ritalin, I took 10 mg tablets. They last 2-4 hrs in most people. I took them every 4 hrs at first, reducing the intervals to 3 hrs later on. The medicine worked wonderfully, but I had to go through about 4 periods like that a day. :faint: It's been a while since I've been drinking, but the same thing happens when booze wears off too, doesn't it? Except maybe over more time.

Hangover, I guess that's what it is. A mild version. Not like with alcohol! Unpleasant feelings like discomfort/unease/restlessness/stress/tension/nervousness/dismay/anxiousness (did I get them all?), when it leaves the body.

With booze, day after drinking, I would feel that way all through the day. I hated Sundays. :p But no headaches or vomiting.
