View Full Version : Recognizing ADD in Others

Despite being a very impulsive ADHDer, I would never outright tell someone they had ADD...well, unless they were a member of my family, lol.

However, I find myself recognizing ADD in others. It's like this connection I pick up on immediately. I do tend to really like these people. I mean, they're hardly boring, they can keep up with my conversation, they're enthusiastic, and they're usually so genuine.

I met up with an old friend last night, someone I haven't seen since high school. She was telling me about how she just can't seem to hold down a job because her interests are constantly changing, and we were having one of those ADD on ADD talks, where we were both sort of speeding along like two snowballs getting bigger and bigger...

We were also talking about how intense we are, the loud first impressions we give off and don't realize it, etc...

I know she's not diagnosed but it's like I can just feel it, you know? Does anyone else have experiences like this?

Yeah, I have.

Sometimes it's a bit harder than others depending on how obvious the behavior is but generally I can sense one of my own "kind". ;)

Most of the time I haven't gotten along with them due to personality issues, but there's one I've known since college as well and it's nice just to be able to have someone who "gets it" that I can open up around.

Everyone has ADD tendencies.. it's when they interfer with daily life that i think one can actually deifne it as ADD

Everyone has ADD tendencies.. it's when they interfer with daily life that i think one can actually deifne it as ADDYeah, but when it's somebody close to you, over time, you are fair to have thoughts about it.

Even when I strongly suspected it in someone (only one yet), I keep my mouth shut. Perhaps a few vague hints - if their behavior seems to bother them. If somebody came to me about it, the situation would be another.

I'm scared people will feel, like, I've only found God, that I am now preaching to everyone. Only through faith in Jesus, one can be saved from sin and eternal death (no attack or ill words on religion). OMG! Everybody has it! Everybody has it!.

I can't spot it.. lol..I don't pay attention long enough and I mean that in the most serious way possible haha.. I just don't remember much about people that I meet or interact with.

I'm the same way. I've brought it up once was when this particular person was wondering why they were acting the way they were acting.

I gave them my opinion and they said it wasn't the first time they heard it and finally got checked out. Turns out she was inattentive ADD. :D

 I remember I met someone with ADD quite awhile ago and there was definitely an instant attraction and kinship! However, we ended up getting drunk and decided mutually that we would be too volatile together, although, that in itself was a turn on.

2 people with ADHD?!~?!?!   Sounds fun for 30-60 days before reality sets in...

To the people posting that both have ADHD, my hat is off to you. I am sure there is good and bad chemistry, as in any other relationship.

I think we all come across people we can relate to. Sometimes we can see a bit of ourselves in others, but I think some of us are too quick in thinking another person has ADD or ADHD. It is important to remember that we all have ADD and ADHD traits, and some of those traits stand out more than others, but unless its causing the person impairment it is not considered to be ADD or ADHD - usually it is just a trait here or there and we can pick up on it very quickly... basically, we all have it to some degree, if we want to think about it like that.

My brother's friend is soooo ADD. I can tell. He's about 4 years younger than me, but almost repeating my life in the things he does. He was telling me how he couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. I finally told him what I thought and he's considering having it checked out now. I really hope he does.

... but it's like I can just feel it, you know? Does anyone else have experiences like this?Oh yes, I definitely have that. Most of the ppl that I get along with do have at least ADD tendencies, but with the ones that are 'plain old' inattentive ADD like me the contact and mutual understanding-without-words is amazing, almost like we're twins.

I agree Luthien, but that's no surprise to you because, well, I have inattentive ADD too :)

I am hyperactive & impulsive and I love it when that happens!, although it's not very often :(

Me too.
Inattentive is a good bit harder to spot.

Inattentive is a good bit harder to spot.Well yes, naturally. The recognition that I have experienced has until now always been "after the fact" - when you meet up with someone that you already know has ADD-PI. But then the recognition is really strong and deep, in all sorts of things that, admittedly, do not make a whole lot of noise.

I suppose spotting another ADD-PI in the wild would take careful observation.
