I was just googling this, and this post came up. Just curious because my voice seems to be slightly higher after a week and a half on the med (vyvanse, not adderal). I noticed because I work in radio...my voice is my job, lol.

It looks like no one had any thoughts on this last year...how bout now?

Not directly.

Amphetamines, as well as many other drugs that block dopamine indirectly cause Prolactin levels to rise. Higher Prolactin levels result in reduced sex drive and may cause a downward trend in testosterone levels.

At the levels prescribed for ADHD it usually isn't an issue from what I've read. We're all different though.

Well i can tell you that my husband has taken adderall for years and he can only work out during the periods he's off of it, he says it does affect his testosterone, to the point that its almost impossible to work out while on it. My husband also has a particularly high sex drive/appetite and aggressive demeanor because he does have alot more testosterone than the average man and i've noticed that while on his meds its greatly reduced, so i believe so, yes.

don't amphetamines increase dopamine? my testosterone is already low, i was hoping adderall would help increase it!

It could raise or lower sex drive to have more dopamine, depending on dose. Same with your basic drive. If you are having negative effects then either your dose is too high or you are naturally higher than average in that area. Over time, too much stimulation can burn out your nerves. {moderator edit}

Hi,
Adderall can cause an increase in muscle tension. If the muscles around your vocal cords are more tense, this would cause your voice to go higher. If so, you might want to try some relaxation exercises. Also see the earlier post about Magnesium.
I have heard nor read about stimulants affecting testosterone levels.
Good luck.

Amphetamines lower testosterone by increasing cAMP in the local testicle tissue. You can google amphetamine and testosterone or search Pubmed. I haven't used Adderall but both Vyvanse and Dexedrine first increased my libido(35 yo male) then lowered it to nothing. This is also what Stephen Stahl says happens in Essential Psychopharmacology: the Prescriber's Guide. Men who experience a drop in libido on amphetamine would benefit from HCG and/or testosterone supplementation. Also keep the amp dosage to as low as possible, even to once every other day.

that explains a lot. i'm 27 and my sex drive is low normally, but i still can get an erection if i think about it. but i noticed that after i started on my meds i hardly get morning wood.. i'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

as far as workin out, i experience the opposite of what LithiumX's husband experiences while on adderall. i actually am able to get myself to the gym. while i'm on it,rather than just thinking about going and putting it off, i'll actually do it.

but that whole testosterone thing sucks... `=(

I think these drugs have a partcular efefct in the certain part of the brain, rather than the whole body and so im not sure the effect they would have on organs such as those wich produce testosterone even though they are controled by dopamine. but i thought too that they increased dopamine activity, although they may have an indeterminate effect on other people outside the brain.

I get far less angry on meds, this is partly becuase things dont go so horibly wrong, and ive got far more patience and i feel calmer too, but the suden burst of adrenalin i get from geting angry gives me far more energy than the stimulants do,
maybe this lack of adrenaline being pumped out naturaly is as much as an effect on your performance as anything?

amphetamines activate the sympathetic nervous system. this triggers your bodies flight or fight responses and your brain tells non-vital systems to act secondary to those which are vital to survival or immediate action. if you're asking because of sexual reasons, you should know that amphetamines are vasoconstricters and blood flow to and the functionality of the male sex organs will drop dramatically.

it works in the opposite way too. the parasympathetic nervous system is at work during heightened states of arousal, as the body's resources are no longer being appropriated in a lopsided manner to those systems and organs which are needed for basic survival.

other features of the sympathetic nervous system in action:

Diverts blood flow away from the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract and skin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin) via vasoconstriction.

Blood flow to skeletal muscles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeletal_muscle), the lung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lung) is not only maintained, but enhanced (by as much as 1200%, in the case of skeletal muscles).

Dilates bronchioles of the lung, which allows for greater alveolar oxygen exchange.

Increases heart rate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate) and the contractility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contractility) of cardiac cells (myocytes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myocytes)), thereby providing a mechanism for the enhanced blood flow to skeletal muscles.

Dilates pupils and relaxes the lens, allowing more light to enter the eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye).

There are other co-factors to do with libido than strictly Dopamine.

And if morning wood is a problem there is a definite imbalance of other neurotransmitters and/or hormones.

As for the question about adderall affecting your voice, it does mine also. However this probably has little to nothing to do with your testosterone level. Since adderall and vyvanase are just different forms of dexadrine, and dexadrine was once used as a decongestant. I sing and have noticed a significant difference, i can hit much higher notes than before. This is prbably because I no longer have sinus drainage.

Interesting thread. My sex drive has a sharp temporary increase, then a nose dive when taking Adderall. I also get very cold which the info above about our blood being channeled away from our skin supports. I also cannot work out because my blood pressure drops very low and working out makes me feel as if something is about to give in a bad way. Guess we are all so different in how this drug affects us.
