View Full Version : Afraid to ask for a meds increase
heretic 11-28-07, 01:11 AM ok, so i'm getting my perscription refilled on tuesday, and i want to ask for a new dosage.
The dose i'm on now (90mg vyvanse per day) works great for day to day stuff like driving, running errands, remembering stuff, what have you.
But when i try to do academic stuff, it only decreases my symptoms by like 50%, so i need more.
The problem is, i feel like 90mg a day is already a lot, and i don't want to seem like i'm abusing it. I want to get the full benefit, but i don't want to be taking too much of the stuff.
I guess I'm just wondering if you all think i should bring this up or if i should just forgo the meds, or the full dose, on some days so i'll have the extra one when i need it.
If i should bring it up, how should i go about that?
pedalpounder 11-28-07, 01:17 AM A different med may work better, or adding on another med might work well for you. I take Strattera + Adderall XR, and the combo works really well for me.
heretic 11-28-07, 01:24 AM i think what this is going to come down to is just that i have to tell the doc and see what he says.
I just don't want him to see me as abusing it, because i'm not!
2scattered 11-28-07, 01:41 AM If you need more or better coverage, talk to your doctor. Explain it to him/her the way you posted here. You deserve adequate symptom control in all areas of your life. I think you'll be selling yourself short if you don't bring it up. As long as you're not experiencing side effects, there's probably room to go up or add another med.
P.S. I'm sure you're not the only one taking 90mg or more of Vyvanse. ;) It's probably roughly equivalent to 40-45mg of Adderall...not that big of a dose.
2scattered 11-28-07, 02:02 AM I noticed in one of your other posts that your taking 60mg in the morning and 30mg in the afternoon. Have you tried taking the entire 90mg at once? You might get better and longer coverage that way.
Matt S. 11-28-07, 04:29 AM I think you'll get desperate and get over the fear.
Here's a reference for you.
Theres 10 mg of dexedrine for approximately 25 mg of Vyvanse, at least according to a couple of articles I have read, and the maximum dose of Dexedrine that is recommended is 60 mg, so asking for more Vyvanse is not unreasonable.
heretic,
please take a look at my post:

BethanyBez 11-28-07, 09:42 PM I can relate. I think that as ADDers we sometimes tend to overanalyze things and therefore worry more than is necessary about how asking for a certain dosage will appear to our doctors. I have def. been in situations where I felt like I was conversing with a psych for the purpose of doing a drug deal rather than trying to genuinely feel better.
Do you like/trust your doctor? If you do, you should not feel guilty or weird about discussing medication with him/her. I have had similar feelings and have always ended up deciding that I was not seeing the right doctor. You need to be with someone who you trust to "get you" and get to know you enough to see that your needs are real, not just lame requests for more pills.
I think as long as you know that your needs are sincere you should feel fine about making certain requests or discussing things with your doctor. Your doctor can probably read that sincerity.
chinesebob 11-28-07, 09:43 PM I think it depends on what you are used to. I take 50mg when I get up and then another 50mg just before I walk out the door. So about 2 - 3 hours difference. Vyvanse starts kicking in after 45 - minutes but it's potenency is around 4-6 hour period in the middle - so if you take your medicine at 9 by 10 you are feeling the full effect but by 2-4PM you start to notice a taper off.
It's actually a little strong for me so I'm playing with the amounts so I can adjust. That's what I would do, but put your does closer to have a better effect. Or take them at the same time. I also go to half strength on the weekends so that I'm not wired for sound.
MonkeyGirl 11-29-07, 07:35 AM i think what this is going to come down to is just that i have to tell the doc and see what he says.
I just don't want him to see me as abusing it, because i'm not!No matter how you ask him, he'll hear it that way. Does he tell you already you are on a high dosage?

I had the same so-so effect from 90mg. My insurance wouldn't cover more than 70mg/day, so I switched to Adderall XR 30mg twice a day.
My pdoc thinks when Vyvanse is approved for adults, they may offer 90mg or 120mg.
heretic 12-02-07, 02:59 AM thanks guys. I feel a lot better, i should have known better than to talk to my friends who know nothing about this stuff. They seemed to just agree that 90 seemed like a lot.
Now that i know it's not really that high, i feel a lot better about bringing it up. But i still think i'm going to bring it up as a more general comment and not directly ask for it. I'll be more comfortable doing that.
I'm just going to tell him, "now I don't know if i've just adjusted and it's the limitations of the meds, but i've noticed this:..." and tell him what is working and how it's not.
If he doesn't want to change anything, that's fine, but I think i might need to.
