Since it's completely legal that I am taking it, how do you go about informing them that you take it? Also, how do they distinguish Adderall from illegal amphetamines in your system? Do you have to bring your prescription with you to the drug test to prove its yours?

You just let them know and they may require written released record of it from your doctor, but taking the prescription will you may bypass that.

Just out of curiosity, if you stopped taking Adderall, how long does it stay in your system, that can be detected in a test like this?

Not sure how long it stays in your system....maybe a few days? I know it stops working after a few hours.

You should be fine with the drug test. They will ask you beforehand if you take any medications. Put the Adderall down then. One time I was coming off of a surgery and had been taking Vicodin and that showed up. I just told them beforehand I was taking it and I never had to prove it with a bottle or a prescription. I was still hired.

I never told anyone anything, and I took my normal 30 mg IR adderall a couple of hours before the test, and everything went fine. The drug testing lab and the company never asked me anything. I was hired, and have been working at the company for a year now. And you might find it beneficial to know that company is extremely anal about drug testing, and if they had found anything at all that might have not been normal, they would have not hired me.

Relax - like you said, you're not doing anything wrong. Although it really depends on your personal thoughts/views - but if I were you, I would not mention anything, and just go with the flow. If they do find out, they will tell you about it, and then you can tell them about your prescription. If they don't find out, then they never find out.

Well, the thing they test for 5 drugs
1. Marijuana
2. Cocaine
3. Amphetamine
4. Opiates
5. Phencyclidine or PCP

So the answer is YES, Adderall is nothing more than a mixture of d/l-amphetamine. It will show up as amphetamine on a drug test. It may show up as methamphetamine if thats all they are testing for in the drug test. Amphetamines are testable in urine for up to 4 or 5 days after heavy use or in your case may be just 42 hours. So the best thing would be to stop taking them 2 - 3 days before the testing or if you have a prescription for Adderal bringing that with you and notify them.

If you have a legal prescription for a medical condition and have to take a drug test you will pass, unless you test positive and are not able to provide documentation for a particular drug being in your system.

I recently had a drug test and brought my bottle with me. The person testing told me to put it away, take the test, and if there was an issue with it I would be contacted by the labs medical doctor. I knew I would be contacted- so make sure you give a valid phone number etc.- and sure enough about a week later I was called and asked if I take any prescription meds. I was asked to fax the label from the bottle/prescription and told that as long as I did this and it was valid that my test was considered negative or passing. This was between me and the lab- the employer is totally out of the loop unless the test is positive.


And also about what they test for. If they are testing for Methampheatmine only- adderall will not show up. If they are testing for amphetamine- typical in employment drug tests- adderall will show up.

The bottomline is if you have a valid prescription AND are not using anything you should not be using, you will pass the test.

The half life of amphetamines (d/l isomers as the form of adderall) is anywhere from 9-18 hours (depending on IR vs XR). Assuming normal kidney and liver function, this means the drug will be metabolized and excreted by (at the latest) =36 hours after administration. This holds true for any dosage, so long as you are in your therapeutic window (i.e. your doctor and you are both knowledgeable in how much you truly need to be effective--depending on your individualized rate of metabolism).

Additionally, the pH of your urine can speed or decelerate this process. Because acid will increase ionization and renal clearance, the lower the pH of your urine, the quicker you will excrete the drug and its derivatives. Also, diets high in vegetables and citrus fruits; and generally also any type of urinary tract infection will increase urine pH, prolonging the time it takes for the drug to be cleared.
