I posted this on another thread but I'm thinking this forum might generate more responses. I'm interviewing for a new job and if I get the two jobs I'm interviewing for next week I will most likely have to take a drug test. This is the first drug test I will take being on Adderall and I'm just wondering how I go about informing them I am on ADD meds. How can they distinguish between Adderall and illegal amphetamines? Do I have to bring my prescription with me when I go to prove I am legally prescribed? Anyone with direct experience with this I would appreciate hearing from.

The drug test will pick up 4 different amphetamines in your system (Adderall is 4 different amphetamines), some tests test for any level where others only test above the therapeutic level.

Illegal amphetamines that are usually available is methamphetamine or other people's prescriptions of Adderall or Dexedrine.

I try not to tell anyone I have ADD. It’s personal. Besides, they will never understand what you’re going through. They just want you to do your job as though you don’t have ADD. As far as the drug test, when the results come back, the testing facility is supposed to contact you first. At that time, unless they ask you for them before the test, show them your valid scripts for whatever came back positive and you’re home free. All the testing facility can tell your employer is that your test results were negative. At least, that’s the way it works in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Florida</st1:State></st1:place>.

My mom once took a drug test here in Ohio, and it came back positive. She's not a druggie....she had eatin a muffin with poppy seeds in it (morphine). They was hesitant to give her the job until she explained the situation.

It will show up. I once was on Vicodin following a surgery when I took a blood test. I told them at the clinic that it was prescribed and I never had to prove it. I was hired and didn't have to explain anything to my employer. They never asked. All you have to do is tell them at the clinic that draws the blood that it is prescribed and maybe the employer won't ask any questions.

Due to the new HICFA thing in the US the collection facility will not ask about any medications you are taking nor will they need to record what you are on. Once the urine specimen is submitted to the lab and tested the results will come back positive for amphetamines - the MRO {Medical review officer} will call the contact number given in your COC {chain of custody - the pieces of paper you signed and initialed when you gave the specimen} The MRO will ask you for your prescription number, name of Pharmacy, date of last refill, Dr. name, and phone number to your pharmacy including area code. He may or may not ask you for the medication name or dosage - all the information asked by the MRO will appear on your prescription bottle then the MRO will call the pharmacy and verify that the prescription is your legally - how this is communicated to employers differs - mine came back - no illegal substances found.

Mine showed a positive for amphetamines. I was contacted by the MRO and asked to provide the pharmacy name/number and prescription number. It was sent to my employer (a Mental Health facility) as a prescribed positive. Because it was a community mental health facility, it was their policy to receive all positive notifications.

Thanks for this post... I have been wondering the same thing since I am job hunting, except I take Ritalin. I have heard of people not being hired because they had a prescription medication (including some who had painkillers after a surgery) in their system. Personally I think the whole drug war thing is a load of BS. But I'll worry less now thanks to this post. Back to trying to remember to take my meds...

When I took my drug test for my job (cotton swab held between my cheek and gums) I wasn't on any ADD medication... I still am not on any meds. I would tell whoever administers the test (for me it was my HR manager in her office) that you are on ADD medication or if there's any paperwork you have to fill out, see if there's a section you can write down your medications.

btw, jason_b1980, it's Opium that is derived from the Poppy. Poppy seed muffins, or anything made with Poppy seed, will test you positive for Opium. (Not sure what Morphine is made of but I don't think it's poppy... I could be wrong... but I know Opium is made from Poppy.)

I was watching Mythbusters and they tested the myth of eating Poppy Seed muffins, cake, etc. would test you positive for drugs. So they ate Poppy Seed and I think it tested them positive for the next 24 or 48 hours...

So... Don't eat poppy seed anything for at least 3 days before your drug test. lol.
