Hi eveyone.

Thanks to everyone for buliding this webpage. plenty of info. thanks :-) felt better as soon as i found it.

I am male, 24 yrs old, 6ft, 156lb. I knew all my life that i had ADD but never got around checking it out. I am not organized, forgetful, distracted but acedemics were ok 3.5+ in college, held on to one job for about 5yrs now (strict parents i guess). i am in my senior year now and can't seem to adopt to the pressure and fraustration turned in to depression so i went to doc and she told me i have ADD for real. I just started generic adderall 5mg this saturday. taking twice a day..so I have a few questions,,,

Q)I think adderall treated my depression right away.

I feel better and confident..(started to study after got back from overnight job,, never happend). and it seem to last long after the affect of adderall is over.

Is it normal to get this kind of relif ?and longer lasting effect, normal?

Q) I am taking only 5mg. it seems to make me feel better but the kind of concentration i was expecting did not seem to occur, does it get better with higher dose? does body structure matter? my metabolism rate is fast/high, how would that make difference?

Q) My calmness / focus seem to last only 100 min or so ..am i losing the med too fast? ( i kept an eye out, for the 1st time i felt in control of my brain . no second/ third strand of thoughts. no cut of, less prone to get distracted. distraction was not totally gone though. So i really felt it when the med effect was over. ) is it because the dose is low?

Q) higher dose question

would it increase concentration/ focus ability ? 5mg is not makeing that big a difference, but i feel the difference so i am happy to know somthing is working.

5mg last no more then 2hrs .. How can i increase coverage, 2hrs is nothing .i study for 8-10hrs a day.

Q) sodium bicarbonate increase the absoption of amphetamine.. Should i drink some bicarbonate before I take the med ? is it good or bad ?

Sorry for this lonnnnng post.

thanks for all the answers..

Sam

Sometimes depression improves when the ADHD is treated.

5 mg is a relatively small dose. Some people do well at a small dose... it varies a bit. I'm glad you had an improvement right away. That is an encouraging sign that the doc might have you on the right medication. Your doc might have you "titrate up" to a higher dose. Work with your doctor on that. Instant release adderall tends to wear off fast. You might do better on the extended release capsules once your doc has worked out the right dose for you.

Meds won't cure ADHD, they do make it better, but you will still have adhd no matter what. The meds help, the rest is up to you.

My advice is to learn everything you can about ADHD. That will help too.

Addemon,

I don't know if this helps, but before I was diagnosed with ADD and started to receive help through therapy I was a complete emotional train wreck! BUT, I was given an SSRI which had very negative effects on me. I took them for 6 weeks and then on top of my ADD I suffered serious withdrawal syndrome! Withdrawal syndrome can be the pits, an absolute nightmare. Be sure that you always take the meds exactly as prescribed, if you don't you could suffer negative effects. I went off cold turkey, never, no never ever do that. Talk to your doctor please!

The good news is that other than those 6 weeks I have never taken meds for my ADD or depression and I have come a very long positive way with therapy. Professional therapy. Writing about my experiences was highly suggested and advised by my therapist and it has been of tremendous value.

Have you tried therapy? Also, Speedo is 110% correct about learning more about ADD ADHD - it is so very important to learn all that you can. For some reason learning all you can about ADD ADHD provides a way for us to understand ourselves and through that we learn new coping skills and how to use our positive traits. You do know we have very many positive traits right? They can be used to your advantage. I write about that a lot on my blog, because I think the positives are often under valued due to our low self-esteem and the ridicule and chastisement we have suffered through.

God bless you and best wishes always,

Bryan

Read about ADD. You may well find a vitamin/nutritional program that will help you. And you may need to tinker with the dose and timing of your meds.

Doctors/myself thought I was depressed. After taking the ADD meds, I no longer feel that way. I think it is because I no longer feel frustrated all the time.

New question;

How my diet affect my intake or absorbance of adderall?

How do I learn to self descipline myself? I could not do it for last few years?
any suggestions?

Thanks for your answers

i think it varies for person to person.

they say dont drink coffee-- im fine with coffee.
but, if i eat fruit the first couple hours within taking it, i feel like it hasnt worked for me that day. acids and citrus type stuff. my son is allergic to fake vitamin c--acsorbic acid-- so i dont have that too much in the house anyways.

I agree with the above statement. any type of med will vary to a degree from person to person. By the way, kimmy thank you about the fruit I think that mabe that may be the same for me.

i am taking vitamin C at the end of the day when i don't need adderall.

I avoide all kinda juice.

I don't know if the 5mg is working anymore. i am going to see the doc today. I will tell her what happend and see wht she tell me .

Doc started me on 10mg of Adderall extended release, then bumped me up to 20 mg. Citrus juices increase the absorption rate of Adderall. I have not noticed it though.

After switching from and office job to teaching, Doc bumped me up to 30mg, for which I was greatful. I have never been a heavy coffee drinker but like it every once in a while. After I started 30mg, I noticed my hands would shake and my heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. So no more caffinated coffee for me.

Since I am a sp. ed. teacher, the spring is an exceptionally busy time of year, due to writing IEP's for my students. This year Doc is going to add a short acting dose at noon, but only for 3 months.

My doctor is switching me off of Adderall because while it helped my mood and my depression, it did not do anything for my focus/concentration. My doctor says that some drugs treat one component of ADD and not others, and that we should find something that helps me in all areas. I'm just saying that one theory is that this may not be the right drug for you...but I would see if your doc can increase the dosage before you decide anything like that because 5 mgs is a very small dose.

Personally at this point I would ask to try a different drug. There are lots out there to choose from, so if you aren't getting any results at all at 20 mgs, why waste your time? Move on to something else.
