View Full Version : What was your first experience like with Ritalin
EchoRides 12-04-07, 03:25 PM I have not been diagnosed with ADD but my doctor agreed that I exhibit most of the traits. It will take 6 months for me to get an assesment. In the meantime he has started me on Ritalin on a trial basis. I have had one dose, 10mg. What should I be expecting? Some people have talked about getting highs, I have none of that. Though there seems like there are less excuses for me to do things in my head right now... maybe this is a placebo effect?
Hi Echorides, If you didn't get a high with Ritalin that probably means you needed it :) . For me, ritalin (short acting) calms things down - I can focus on one thing at a time with some reduction in the extraneous thoughts butting in. Now if I could just figure out how to magically fix the procrastination. My doc said that if I get a high to stop taking it - no high for me just calmer and more focused. Also less like to get anxious and annoyed. The problem I have found is that I cannot take it after 6:30 pm or I will stay up way too late. I am not a night person so late for me is 11:00.
I started out with 5mg twice a day but right now I usually take 10mg am, 10mg early afternoon and 5 mg late afternoon during the week. You should work with your doc to get the right dosage and the right meds. Speak up if something doesn't feel right.
There is lots of info about meds and people's reactions on the forums so read up. If one doesn't work something else might.
Good luck.
amiegrace 12-04-07, 06:01 PM I experienced no high whatsoever with Ritalin. The world just became very quiet. I can tell when it's wearing off because the world and my thoughts get loud again.
I got "high" on my first dose of Concerta. I'm not sure if it was because of the Concerta or that fact that I was happy to have it. I get the exact same kind of "high" that I got on that day without drugs. Since then, I feel more motivated to do things, but in no way am I feeling high. I'm still irritable and half the time I find it hard to fake being happy when I don't want to be.
2scattered 12-04-07, 07:41 PM My mind was quiet. I felt calm and was able to be "present" in the moment. It slowed me down so that I could actually think, plan and make decisions.
Matt S. 12-04-07, 07:57 PM I don't remember I was 4.
Honeybunnie8 12-05-07, 03:14 PM Ritalin made me tired. Definatly no "high" from it. Concerta did the same thing. Just sleepy feeling and when I drank coffee, just more tired.
I've been on Ritalin for about three hours. I hate it. It didn't make me high, not even a bit, but I can't do a lot of things that were usual to me. My friend came home about half an hour ago and asked me if I was ok because I seemed to talk differently. 30 minutes after taking it I stopped thinking in so many things; it's quiet... and boring so I started looking for something to do. I made some errands which I finished in less than 40 minutes (my mom was amazed hahahaha, I guess that's nice) but I can't even read while listening to music!!!! I just CAN'T! I've done that forever! I can't do anything while listening to music. I can't talk and do stuff at the same time. My next dose comes in a few hours, lets see how it goes. But yeah, I guess it's doing what it's supposed to be doing.

sounds like bliss!!!

haha i remember this. i was a little sad that i couldn't enjoy a lot of things all at once anymore. you'll be surprised at how well you can stick to one thing at a time though. overall, it feels good.
Luthien 01-02-08, 12:09 AM on my first 10 mg: a sense of quiet, calmness in my head, peaceful. The outside world seemed closer and I felt much more a part of it. It was strangely easy to set myself to do something, like I did not have to take the "bump" that I normally experience - I thought of doing it and I just *did*. Weird. But great.
francis_r 01-08-08, 07:59 AM My first dose was Ritalin LA 20 mg (actually I used the Belgian equivalent, which is called Rilatine MR 20, also from Novartis).
The first dose I experienced not much. Slight tension in my jaws. Slightly nauseous. A but numbed. No stimulation at all. I didn't even feel any more motivated to do my work than usual. It was really weird.
