View Full Version : Effexor XR + adderall IR?
Sooo I decided that since I'd taken only a third of the reccomended adderall I would try it again after talking to my doctor about the anxiety/slight hypochondria effects. So he says he's going to prescribe me effexor XR and gives me a bunch of samples and a prescription but says we'll wait to see how that goes to give me AD/HD meds. But then I remind him that he gave me adderall a month ago and he says, "Oh good!" and writes a prescription for that too. Like he didn't know what side effects I was talking about a minute ago.
Then I go to drugs.com and check interactions and effexor XR with both ingredients of adderall is a "major drug-drug" interaction with an explanation point by it. It says I should "generally avoid". I already took both... should I stop until I can reach the doctor again? Although, he did prescribe them both at the same time.
And by the way, he prescribed the anti-depressantsant/anxiety meds with AD/HD meds as reccomended by a psychologist who I see weekly. Not just flying blind.
Teedrum 12-05-07, 06:22 AM my doc perscribed adderall xr after knowing i've been on paxil (also anxiety/depression med) sins 2002
i would take any concerns back to your doc though, and if you notice any side effects, go to emerg.
Ok. I always notice side effects, I have a small touch of hypochondria. This like week I was freaking out about my apparent eye infection (eye crust during the day) and now I'm all scared I might get a staff and now I have serotonin syndrom to worry about. =/
Isn't there a type of antidepressant you can take with adderall? The fact that this one increases eye pressure worries me even more!
I'm a frequenter of the poison control hotline as well, and goign to the doctor for "appendecites" and "glucoma". :o
I dunno if I should take this...
Teedrum 12-06-07, 01:37 AM its a tough call,
i thought the same thing when i read it. I started to get chest pressure, which started a chain reaction of anxiety which didn't help the situation at all.
Have you or your doctor thought about wellbutrin?
its been used to treat both depression/anxiety, and adhd...
SSRI antidepressents all act on serotonin so they would all run the risk of serotnin syndrome. Another one that i worried about, but i think thats why i'm starting off so slow, i'm 15mg xr for a month and a half before the doc is gonna increase.
I've actually been thinking about welburtrine and I should ask. Apparently effexor is not an SSRI but an SNRI. I dunno though. Doctors worry me.
ozchris 12-06-07, 07:57 PM Get a new doctor :) He's probably really busy or not experienced with using these kinds of drugs.
Effexor is an SSRI until you hit around 150mg+ (not many GP doctors even know this)
I've taken Dexedrine which is very similar to adderall + effexor and I was 100% fine apart from a few side effects. Overall the effexor helped with the stimulant side effects.
I'd recommend you start on just the effexor for a few weeks/ a month until it starts working and then add the adderall slowly starting at low doses.
Another thing to think about is maybe trying another anti-depressant first. Effexor is hard to come off, some people find it extremely difficult. (not many GPs know this either :() The discontinuation effects (withdrawl) can be horrible. Any other anti-depressant is easier to come off than effexor. Do some searching about it, lots of information is around.
Wellbutin sounds like a good idea. Strattera is also another good one to try that is not a stimulant.
The main thing you should be doing is finding a doctor/psychiatrist that is experienced with treating ADD.
Hope I haven't given you more to worry about.
Yeah I know, I was researching effexor and its not looking good. I was once on Lexapro, but I stopped because it worked so well it scared me. Like, after eleven days I had oddly low anxiety, was forgeting to do my ocd rituals (they're very minor though, but important) and was feeling less agressive and bothered. And I left the house and enjoyed myself! It worried me I was damaging my brain though. Besides that it made me hurl for the first time in years.
Aaagh, so many desigions with doctors and drugs and whatnot!
And about strattera, that stuff didn't help me work and it was like an all-day sleeping pill.
ozchris 12-06-07, 08:12 PM Lexapro can't damage your brain. It can slightly change parts of your brain while you're on it but once you stop those things go back to normal.
Yeah, Strattera sometimes has that effect on people. Hopefully the wellbutin will work better when/if you try it.
Sounds like you should try and get back on Lexapro. Massive changes like that can be frightening though :(
Michael_J 12-10-07, 11:57 AM i take effexor XR 150mg and adderall XR 15mgs daily without any issues. My psych is somewhat of a pez dispenser of meds and he said there would be no interaction issues. I checked online and spoke with the pharmacist and he said it would fine as well. The only thing would be that the adderall may increase the side effects of the Effexor, drowsiness, anxiety, etc.
I haven't seen any of these effects, but i'm taking XR and you talked about IR; so it may be different.
Honestly, Adderal XR, Effexor, and Lamictal are the best cocktail I've had over the near 10 years of taking meds. I have no anxiety anymore and have never felt better. It makes me happy to think that our medicine has evolved enough to help people like me.. i can't imagine going through this in the early 1900's..
BethanyBez 12-10-07, 04:42 PM I take Effexor 150 mgs and Adderall 40 mgs with no physical side effects other than very small periodical headaches. I completely trust my psychiatrist (I've seen a lot to compare him to!) and he said the combo shouldn't necessarily be a problem. Of course, it's always different for everyone, the reactions to these meds.
Now, I really, really, really want to reiterate what one of the previous posters said about Effexor being difficult to withdraw from. I actually am NOT on Effexor because I need it (I'm not even sure I ever benefitted from it) but because after getting on it my body is now addicted. If I miss a dose even by a few hours I am seriously, seriously physically ill. Most people on Effexor have this problem. If you are the type to ever miss a pill, and I know a lot of ADDers are, watch out! It is a good idea to stash some extra Effexor everywhere you can. If you ever decide to go off the drug, it can be a long, painful process. Just consider yourself warned!!
