View Full Version : Stomach Discomfort?
MrMBenz1 12-12-07, 11:33 AM Yesterday I switched from Adderall 20mg XR to Vyvanse 30mg since I wanted to test out whether Vyvanse does actually offer longer coverage. I notice that once the medication begins to kick in, I experience rather persistent stomach discomfort. Has anybody else encountered this adverse effect, and if so, does it go away once the body adjusts to the new medication? I found Vyvanse to be much smother, both in terms of onset as well as when the medication wears off. I'd like to continue my trial to determine whether it really does offer better coverage, however I don't see how that will be feasible if this stomach issue doesn't resolve itself... Thanks in advance for the feed back!
Da' Ricker 12-12-07, 12:34 PM I had a pretty irritating stomachache the first day I went onto the drug actually, never any issues after that. Hopefully it won't continue for you.
blueyeyore 12-12-07, 12:42 PM I've been on it since September 26th...I was in the ER on October 4th with my stomach pains, but mine wasn't upper. Mine felt more like my appendix. Alas it wasn't and they sent me home telling me it was because of my medicine. I haven't had any problems since except an occasional upset stomach and getting nauseous when I eat.
Hrm, I get nauseous only if I don't have any food in my belly, and sometimes when the medication begins to wear off. Are you eating any breakfast (even a protein shake/bar or some fruit) in the am?
I've been taking my dose (50mg) like 5-10 minutes before eating some food, so I can give my stomach a bit of a head start in digesting the medicine before starting on the food. I did experience some nasty nausea/gas feelings one morning when I woke up and took it, forgetting to eat breakfast.
MrMBenz1 12-12-07, 02:22 PM Thanks for the responses! With regard to the previous post, I think that was the problem. I'm so used to taking Adderall on an empty stomach, I did the same with Vyvanse. Aftering eating today, I noticed the discomfort has lessened...I will be sure to take the medicine with food tomorrow morning and hope for better results. Thanks again!
theaddman 12-21-07, 07:01 PM I had indigestion the first couple days, after moving from Adderall to Vyvanse, but it has stopped now, and no other problems with it.
Tiddlywinks 12-21-07, 11:31 PM Have been taking Vyvance for 4 days now, and have had diarreha every day. I say in a post on the Adderall page that Vyvance is not effective until it reaches the intestines. Well, my intestines do not like it:eek: . Will it go away?
Yeah, I've been experiencing a bit more looseness in my bowels as well, was much worse when I started taking Vyvanse, but it's getting better.
I have been taking Vyvance 100mg (70mg in AM, 30mg at 1pm) for 2 1/2 months. Previously I was prescribed Adderall XR 100mg for a several years. I have liked the switch from Adderall XR to Vyvance until a few weeks ago. I began experiencing severe stomach pain first at night, and more recently day and night. I have also been extremely constipated for the last 1 1/2. I tried lowering the dose to 70mg. Still more of the same and 70mg does not provide enough coverage.
Long story short...after ExLax, MOM, some liquid in a bottle that looks like Sprite I feel the constipation is relieved but the stomach ache still persists.
I feel like Vyvance has been a nice change from Adderral XR but I am forced to begin taking Adderral XR starting tomorrow.
I really hope that the stomach aches will go away completely, and that being regular won't be a problem. I am concerned about the transition back to Adderral and hope that the change will not cause difficulties for me at work or school. Not sure why I am leaving this post. But I haven't been able to find much info on why Vyvance causes such stomach pain and thought I would share my experience.
Changed back to Adderral XR, but stomach pain has persisted with a little less severity. Went to my family doctor and got call back today that I am Anemic (loosing blood-low rbc count). I have to get an endoscopy to see what the Vyvance did to my stomach to cause so much pain. My doctor hypothesized that the Vyvance increased acid production in my stomach therefore causing a bleeding gastric ulcer. I think it may also have something to do with Lysine...but that's just a hair brain theory knowing only a little about how Vyvance is Metabolized. Not cool what the case may be. My Doctor advised me to check into the hospital if the pain gets too much worse before the endoscopy. I'll post again as I know more.
onatangent 12-05-08, 01:51 AM Hello, great posts. I just started taking adderall xr 30mg 3 days ago. I have a weak stomach to begin with, but the last 3 days were a nightmare. The first day I felt like my concentration was better, but i'm not sure if that was just myself psyching myself out. I only had a protein shake and my stomach killed me the entire day. I felt like i had to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes, but it wasnt the case. It also felt like i had drank a gallon of vodka the night before. I could not bring myself to eat even though I knew i needed to.
The second day, i didn't notice any positive effects of the adderall. All I felt was the horrible pain in my stomach. I knew it was because of hunger since my appetite was totally off after my first day dose. I tried to force feed myself and that would only temporarily help. Pepto helped temporarily too, but GasX made it worse
I'm on day 3. I've only had about 2 and half hours total of solid sleep the last 2 nights. My concentration and focus was still off today. I did eat a bowl of oatmeal right after the pill this morning. My stomach was still slightly upset the whole day even though I kept eating small amounts during the day. Finally about an hour ago, around 7pm day 3, my pain lightened up and I started eating. Within a few minutes I felt my appetite return and for the first time in 3 days no stomach pain!
From everything I've read on the web. The stomach pain is supposed to go away within a week and it looks like it has. But I think you really should have a solid meal when you take the medicine. Also, try to eat throughout the day. You won't feel like it at all, but it will just make the pain worse if you dont eat. I have also heard and read, it really takes a full week for your body to adjust to the drug and for the positive effects to kick in. Anyone agree?
I'll keep you posted on Day 4. I really hope the insomnia and stomach pain was worth it. Cuz this fat kid loves to sleep.
newfoundclarity 12-14-08, 11:40 PM Glad to have found this thread. It would have made me feel much better if I could have read it last night.
Been off and on Vyvanse for at least 6 months, switching back and forth to Adderall XR. I recently started returning to my old dose of Vyvanse 90 mg. An hour or two at the max after breakfast I've begun shaking, abdominal pain, losing focus, it is possible there are some blood sugar issues as well, as I've beeen taking risperdal and seemed to have developed some tremors.
But yesterday the pain was so intense, in my upper abdominals, mostly right side, it felt like my muscles were being rung out like laundry. Was up most of the night contemplating the emergency room. Managed to hold off until this afternoon, where my MD told me that the gallbladder is exactly where I was sensitive.
So I'm holding out hope that its just some severe cramping, or even too high a dose of the Vyvanse causing the discomfort, we'll see... I'll update you guys when I know, and am interested to hear how other people are doing. Before this last transition back to Vyvanse I felt it was an entirely superior medication to Adderall XR, but after this experience, and trying to find the right dose, and being constrained by the 70 mg range I think the XR might be a simpller choice for me, in terms of delivery, and being able to take it 2x per day. Much less pain tonight, thank god, hoping I haven't uncovered a serious problem.
Medication has helped me a great deal, its been a great launch pad for me in terms of putting in the real work on and of my life. But I have been pretty naive in terms of considering possible side effects and long term health in assuming with blind certainty the safety of all of these drugs, particularly when its trial and error in finding the one that is just right for your body chemistry.
Be interested to hear more about lysine and digestion, or the mechanism of action and its effect on blood sugar, etc. Be well all.
qhcowgirl 12-15-08, 02:13 AM newfoundclarity, I have similar problems with Vyvanse (30mg). It causes my stomach to tense up -- so much that I have to concentrate on breathing. Otherwise I start holding my breath. Even when I'm breathing normally, I get kinda lightheaded, dizzy and shaky -- feel like I'm about to faint/pass out -- if I don't keep eating throughout the day. Often, my stomach will be so tight that I won't be able to sleep w/o tylenol or ibuprofen.
It definitely helps w/concentration and getting done what I need to get done but I try not to take it b/c I hate the way it makes me feel.

Do you feel as if you can't stop holding your stomach in (like sucking it in and tensing up)? When I feel overpowered by the medication that is how I feel and I have to keep reminding myself to breath or I realize that after a long time has passed, I have been holding my breath!
When I went from 30mg Vyvanse to 50mg I had discomfort in my stomach all day, I don't quite know how to explain the feeling exactly but it was always on my mind.
That discomfort feeling has gone away now so that's pretty cool and I seem to have less of that intensity causeing me to hold in my stomach. My breathing is ok most of the time also. :)

Yes, exactly! My stomach wants to tie itself in a bowline around my spine and I have to consciously breathe. Otherwise, I'll start noticing that I'm holding my breath. Hate it.
blacktiestudios 02-28-09, 04:32 PM wow, i have been experiencing those stomach issues as well, then i went to the doc and they said i had a prostate infection, now i did have a urine infection weeks before starting vyvanse, could have never fully cleared up. But stimulants make prostates infections worse i was told.
so i stopped the vyvanse and took cipro 500mg, after a few days the burning to pee and the bladder and stomach issues went away. Withdrawal from vyvanse sucked took klonopin to help, started on focalin xr and it worked well made me constipated overall still taking klonopin.
well i am back to vyvanse and its been 3 days and yes it has started to hurt to urinate again What the hell, my penis actually feels like it hurts inside. Its the vyvanse that causes this i no that because when i stop all the symptoms go away.
maybe my body has to get use to it, i dont know what to do. I see alot of people are having problems with there stomach bladder hurting to pee whatever. And its concerning me deeply, my psychiatrist had no idea about any of this when i was in horrible pain and taking vyvanse. i stopped it myself.
saw a urologist they had no idea really either because my urine was clean.
so the vyvanse is what sems to cause my issues, now the prostate infection yes i had that, dont know if when i take vyvanse it acts up or i still have it or what.
by the way i took concerta on day and it was the worst expirence ever it made my bladder stomach and the the painful urination and all that ten times worse never would take that again.
now i canot get to the bottom of this, urnie infection weeks before i went on vyvanse seemed to clear up, maybe it didnt then got prostate infection, vyvanse as a stimulant made it worse im guessing. stopped vyvanse for a week took my cipro 500mg for a while and klonopin felt alot better then back to vyvanse and symtoms are starting to return.
"i am worried when reading peoples threads about A peptic ulcer results when the body can't adjust the pH from the stomach."
someone posted that, i dont know i was having really bad abdominal pain before i went to the doc, i lost like 7 pounds i realized i was not eating or drinking anything really, i am this time on vyvanse but it still hurts to pee and my bladder will feel full.
i just dont know i am getting upset no one can figure it out, i see this all over online, is the vyvanse doing something to me internally and making things worse, do i have a reaction to it, should i give it more time and take it.
what should i do.
when i go to the doctor what test should i have ran to make sure the vyvanse it not causing anything?
i heard about testotrome and stuff i dont know i am worried.
i am a 21 male and very healthy work out and in good shape
blacktiestudios 02-28-09, 04:40 PM also have issues were my testicles hurt or seem to feel numb or enlarge i dont know like that effect of aphemines vac something
gmcf1103 08-31-09, 02:16 PM I have been taking vyvanse for 4 days now. First day took whole pill (30mg) felt fine, the next two days opened pill up and just took half. This morning was the first time I added it to my protein drink before I worked out and 2 hours later I'm having severe abdominal pains. Is this normal? What should I do?
I have read a few post stating I should wait it out..should I? Should I not mix it w protien shake any more? Have a hearty break fast before I take it?
PLEASE HELP...what do I do now that I am having these severe pains at work?
AddaptAbilities 08-31-09, 09:19 PM .

If the symptoms are only there with the vyvanse, it seems you've found your problem. I'd talk to whatever doc is administering your meds about it. This sounds seriously painful -- don't put up with it any longer than you have to.
