View Full Version : ADD - Stimulant withdrawl symptoms?

I was just reading more up about the causes of ADD, and one thing that struck me was the huge increase in stimulant usage such as caffine.

I know caffeine and many other stimulants cause an increase in focus and attention.

So what I wondered was....

Could ADD symptoms simply be caused by the withdrawl of caffeine?

Because caffeine increases mental focus and increases the level of dopamine, so does it not cause your dopamine level to be lower than normal once the effects have ran out?

Has anyone ever tryed going completly stimulant free (including caffeine) for a while to see if the level of dopamine in the CNS has the chance to restore back to its average amount?

Sorry if I have looked into this far too deep, but reading up about this has really gotten me thinking about the possibility that caffeine and other stimulants could actually be the route of the inattention problem in people.

I have. Many time in the past I have cut caffeine to 0 mg per day. The longest I lasted was one month. When I no longer experienced the withdrawal symptoms, I felt the exact same as I did when I was taking in consistant amounts of caffeine per day (about 200 mg).

I've always been creature craving stimulation (in general, not always).

I gave up weed (some ADDers use as a stimulant?) a few weeks back and its nice not to have a stoned head but:

My attention has definitely crashed big time when bored, I focus fine with interesting stimulating stuff and still have wicked hyper-focusing so I doubt its withdrawal as it would be more consistent.

Coffee definitely helps, but the weed was more long term acting.

I now feel like I did before I did weed, but its been some time so thats probably why I notice it more now, together with my increase in awareness and knowledge of ADD. I think people around me have noticed too.

I'm undiagnosed and perhaps in denial. I've looked into related disorders and I don't relate to them anywhere near as much ADD. I'm a bit uneasy in getting a diagnoses for the same reasons as others, plus the fact that my family is similar to me and I think they know more than I do. Its difficult.

Yeah, we're the original people - hunters (hunter gatherer theory), its the neuro typical brainwashed people that are disordered with technology, money, work etc

I'd feel at home in the wilderness, climbing trees and killing my prey. No ADD then, thats where every one came from so whos really disordered?

Its the neuro typicals that need meds...

Why don't you make up a real excuse like not having a job, a car, or any medical insurance. Ohh wait...that's my excuse.

If your mind is bored...weed will make it interesting. The drug of choice for ADHDers is Nicotine. Acts like a stimulant but the delivery system makes it highly addictive.

Coffee. I quite it every weekend as I make Saturday a drug free day. No claw marks on my walls.

Could ADD symptoms simply be caused by the withdrawl of caffeine?Certainly -- caffeine withdrawal can be pretty impairing, but it wears off in a matter of days.
