View Full Version : Scheduling Appts With Your Dr!?

So the specialist I'm seeing for ADD treatment prescribes me my meds.
On my last visit (about 2 weeks ago) she gave me an Rx for Dexedrine with 60 capsules (15 mg each) & said that I could take 2 daily (or 1... whatever I felt worked best for me). Of course 2 tablets work better then 1 for me... because I actually come to find that 3 daily is best.
So I'm supposed to schedule my next appt with her... and she mentioned that she would like me to call in for an appt to be made in late Jan or early Feb.
(I was thinking that maybe she said this because she only had openings during late Jan and Feb.)
So of course I just called the front desk, like usual, and made an appt with one of the secretary's ... except I made it for Dec 31st... Obviously, I disregarded her telling me to make it for late Jan or early Feb...
What I'm trying to figure out is why does she want to set an appt with me when by then I'll clearly be out of medication (in late Jan & early Feb)?
Is it because she wants to make sure I'm not selling it or something? I just don't get it though. I use the medication to help me get by in school and life... and by leaving me stranded for a month without an Rx won't make my life easier. I would like my life to be a progress forward...
I don't want to take 1 step foward & then 3 steps back. Know what I mean?

IF...IF my doctor happens to let me go without an appointment long enough to run out of meds...he tells me to call the office a week before I actually run out and they will mail me a script or I can pick it up at the office. He always has my appts scheduled before I leave the office though.

Jeez, I wish my Dr. were a little more organized then!
With Kaiser I don't think I can get my script mailed home. (By any chance, are you a Kaiser member)
She's told me that the only way I can get it is by picking it up in person.
hmmmm...

I'm not sure why your doc would do that. Perhaps she expects you to pick up another prescription if things go well. But you'd think she'd want the appointment sooner incase it doesn't work out and you need to try something else.

I just call the office a day ahead of time and pick up my script.

No, I'm not. I just googled it, but it came up with a lot of different stuff; I have no idea what Kaiser is. I guess it all depends on the doctor. *shrugs* It was just an option he gave me; I guess it could be because I live a good 30-45 minutes away depending on traffic...real time/gas waster for me to drive all the way out there just to pick up a script and not see him. That's only happened once though, we've managed to get my appointments to match with me needing a new script.

He's real funny about having you make a new appointment. He walks you back to the front..goes behind the wall lets the secretary know how long until your next appointment and then she asks you how long until your next appointment...I"m like dude...didn't he just tell you, but I would never say something that rude to someone lol I figure they have their reasons...or they're really OCD there

It could have been an honest mistake. I would keep your appointment for Dec.31st and if she says anything explain to her that you would have run out of meds. My pdoc gives me enough prescriptions to last the three months until I see him again. Ask for dated scripts at your next visit. By dated scripts I mean she could write the date for the NEXT month on the script so you couldn't fill it until then.

Hmmm thanks MSAM76 for suggesting dated scripts!
But see, I remember when she gave me the run down about getting refills she said the only way she does it is by "coming in with an appt., and you must pick it up in person...I don't like to send by mail unless your a patient who must drive 2 hours to see me... blah blah blah".
I remember her being really stern about it... like maybe a patient had once abused their meds, or something bad like that.
I dont know though.
It won't hurt to ask her I guess. :)

I make my next appt. the same day that I see the doc on the next Monday one month away and I have not had an issue of running out of meds.

It's usually 27 or 28 days from my last appt.
