View Full Version : Weird today. Adderall had ZERO effect on me
I usually take 10mg, 15mg, or 20mg. I start off at 10 and if I feel it's enough for the day I stop there. Otherwise I go to 15 or 20. On most days I feel a decent effect from the 10 or 15 and stop there.
Today I took 10mg and felt NOTHING after half an hour. Then I took another 10mg and stilll NOTHING. I literally had absolutely no effect from the adderall. What's weird is that I didn't even take it the last few days.
Wth is going on? Btw, I've only been taking adderall for about a month now for adult adhd.
Matt S. 12-12-07, 07:28 PM That really isn't much adderall
flirtingwithfate 12-12-07, 09:05 PM Good question. I have that one myself.
I've been on Adderall since last October - newly diagnosed. It was awesome the first month, but seems to have very little effect now. I take 15 mg twice a day, though I tried 20 twice a day after my doctor said I could try it. No difference, though. I go back in January.
Good luck!
I know it's not much, but it was working before and I was feeling the effect at those lose doses....how could my body have adjusted THAT fast? it went from feeling the effect big time and then i didn't take adderall for 3 days and then suddenly the next time i took it i had 0 effect.
once again today i took 20mg and i felt literally nothing. this is really odd....
Matt S. 12-14-07, 05:51 AM I took 60 mg twice a day and 30 mg in the afternoon, so trust me that isn't too much Adderall, I was on too much Adderall which is why I don't take it.
MonkeyGirl 12-14-07, 03:50 PM Do you have allergies? I'm on Ritalin, but a few weeks back something started interfering and it never worked. I had symptoms of allergy too. I took allergy medicine, and now it's back to normal and meds are working fine.
Or maybe it's just that you need a little higher dose?
ben72227 12-15-07, 08:03 PM What did you take it with? Certain things will almost completely neutralize Adderall - Vitamin C (found in almost all fruits, fruit juices, etc.) is a major one.
PraizeHim 12-15-07, 08:20 PM My doctor told me 30MG of Adderall XR was the max dosage - I was started on 20 once a day - it didn't have any effect. She raised it to 30 - still did nothing. I took 40 - nothing. I am going to just stop taking it. Ritalin helped at first - but then just stopped working.
dgessler 12-15-07, 11:21 PM Keep in mind FOOD has a great impact on Adderall. Especially foods like juice, coffee, soda, cheese, broccoli (this is a big one!), tomatoes, etc. Anything acidic or containing vitamin C will greatly reduce the effectiveness of your Adderall. Below is a list of acidifying foods:

I've also noticed that any healthy sized meal I eat while on Adderall will diminish its effectiveness. I think this is especially true with Adderall XR (maybe not as much with IR tabs?).
I've found one way to combat this is to take tums or even better, ranitidine (ingredient in Zantac) 30 minutes to an hour before taking the adderall to create a basic environment in your stomach. I would definitely give it a try. I don't take Adderall everyday, but I've tried this on numerous occasions with surprisingly good results. Cut a Zantac in half, take half before your XR dose, and the other half 3 hours later. Apparently this simply helps the body absorb more of the medication, possibly increasing a 10mg dose by up to 50%.

is this safe to do?
MonkeyGirl 12-17-07, 01:57 PM is this safe to do?Raisins are amongst the food with the greatest alkaline-enhancing effects.
All food after digestion report to the kidney as either acid or base (alkali). Infact fruits and vegetables are the only types of food that have this effect.
Looked up some numbers for you:
Base values of alkaline food (per 100 g):
Raisins -21.0
Spinach -14.0
Carrots -4.6
Apples -2.2
I've never noticed a difference whether I drink sodas like Pepsi Max when I take my medicine. Not in effectiveness nor in how long the medicine works. Big meals close to medicine time however, definitely affects it.

My daughter was doing great on stimulants for several months. But all of a sudden they just stopped working. Why?
There is a possibility that your child has a mimicking disorder. We find that when people have something that looks like ADHD but isn't, the medications sometimes work for a while and then peter out.
But from this description--in which the medications just stopped working all at once--I would suspect another factor: allergies. Allergy reactions release histamines, chemicals that interfere with the action of stimulants.
Although I've seen no studies on the interaction between allergies and ADHD, I can tell you that every spring, I get a number of phone calls from parents telling me that their child's medication is no longer working. After looking at possible factors--for example, a sudden growth spurt or a change in the classroom environment--we often find that the only thing that's changed is the weather. And when I ask the parents if the child's allergies are bad, they almost invariably say yes.
You and your doctor might consider this simple solution: You don't need to increase the stimulant dosage. Just use antihistamines to control the allergy. That usually restores the effectiveness of the ADHD medications during allergy season.
Matt S. 12-17-07, 02:05 PM Some people do a rotation between Ritalin and Adderall every 6 months top combat tolerances like that.
Addywhack 12-17-07, 04:38 PM Sometimes If i take addies and have nothing to do but sit and watch tv I get no stimulation. However if I notice this and get up and get active, I notice stimulation. Maybe it has to get flowing good in the bloodstream. Its almost pointless to take it with nothing to do.
