For those that don't know me here - my son was diagnosed with ADDI around Feb this year. I haven't been diagnosed, however, I know that have the same 'issue'. My son has so far spent a fair amount of time struggling through school, I spent my whole life struggling through school and bombed out in the end.

We just recently received our son's school reports and the change is interesting. So it got me thinking. Early intervention with children with Down Syndrome has a huge positive response. So, with ADD it came be the same. With my son - we're not looking at a massive change, just a subtle change for the better.

Has anyone else seen, (with appropriate changes in child handling), some improvement with their child? What about the older generation who were diagnosed early - did you see an improvement once you were diagnosed?

We have seen a huge improvement with Steven since his was correctly diagnosed (started with just ADHD, added Asperger's to it a year later). With the right medication (finally!) and therapy he's been doing better in the last year then the last few years of his life.

I think it also helps that knowing what is going on with him we can explain it all to the teacher before school starts and give her suggestions on what do do, how to help/handle him. That way it's not a surprise, or a on the job learning experience in what to do.

I can't see how early intervention in any medical situation wouldn't help. Kids are much more adaptable when they are younger, and the sooner they start learning how to deal with whatever issues they have (mental or physical) the better off they would be.

Thanks LL, that just about confirms my suspicions.

Even for the child it's good that they know - they don't spend life wondering why they're so 'different', (like me). I said this to my son the other night. He's lucky that we picked it up early, and we can work on it.

For us, even knowing where we stand has made a huge difference.
