View Full Version : For those with no appetite, what do you eat?
Missgoldie 12-14-07, 06:16 PM Sorry for all the questions:)
For those of you who have diminished appetite or no appetite, what do you eat every day? What does a typical day of food look like for you?
soccerloven 12-14-07, 06:27 PM well monday i weighed my healthy 125... i wake up this morning and i am 105. i look so disgusting. i still foce myself to eat stuff on it and for some reason i still lose weight
marytza 12-14-07, 07:00 PM food can be moms puertorican cooking or fast food or junk food but i leave halve of it cant finish it and few sodas a day some times i can eat all my food im over weight by not much but i dont know it can be fast food and junk food
DeloresMelon 12-14-07, 07:35 PM cereal.
meriellyn 12-15-07, 01:14 PM Small things. Last week was pieces of banana bread, bagel w/ cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter, half a chicken sandwich, etc.
If I make myself eat something really small every few hours, it's a lot easier than trying to force a whole meal down my throat. If I can't stand to eat anything I'll have some milk or something like that.
ben72227 12-15-07, 08:08 PM Very small things - like a small sandwhich or granola bar, etc. if even that. I find myself chewing a lot of gum - gives my mouth something to do since I'm not really eating anything during the day.
Missgoldie 12-15-07, 08:48 PM Thanks for all your replies...
I find that I can only eat very small amounts of simple food as well or I feel sick or get sick.
Today:
slice of raisin bread with peanut butter
apple
cup of tea
It is 6 pm and I know this is not enough food to be healthy so I will force myself to have a protein shake or bowl of cereal in a little bit but I have no desire to eat.
LittlePrincess 12-15-07, 09:54 PM Missgoldie- Hopefully it helps to know that you are not alone in your situation!
I also suffer from the "decreased appetite." Though I tend to describe mine a little differently. When on Adderall or Dex, I can usually still physically tell that my body is hungry. My stomach will even rumble most of the time! I want the feelings of hunger to go away, and I wish for my stomach to stop rumbling, but I DON'T want to eat. It's very strange. (Maybe someone knows what I mean by this...)
Anyway, the easiest way to quiet my tummy is usually to drink a glass of milk or something. (I love milk!) Fruit is also good since its sweet and its something my tastebuds will enjoy. I just have a hard time eating a good solid *dinner* when I get that way.... something like a big plate of spaghetti, a bowl of soup, or even a sandwich is too much for me to handle.
Missgoldie 12-15-07, 10:00 PM Yes, it is nice to know that other people are experiencing the same thing.
I used to enjoy going out to eat but I cannot see that happening on these meds unless my appetite comes back.
Mini meals will have to do:)
Cindylouwhoo 12-17-07, 12:17 PM i dont mind the decreased appetite.
ive lost 20lbs while on adderall (i took advantage of the loss of appetite and added more cardio durring the week, so it wasnt from not eating) in a month and half. i also have a lot of muscle because of soccer. i played for college, and i'm trying out for a professional league in Jan.
i play soccer everyday for at least 1 hour, then do some laps/sprints. sit ups (25) 3 days a week.
i eat healthier stuff-
i love mcintosh apples, i eat like 2 a day
small bowl of rice with chicken and veggies on top.
i have to force myself to eat sometimes, after the meds wear off my appetite comes back though around 9pm, and i eat whatever i want, just 1/4 of however much i would have eaten before the meds.
also, TAKE A GOOD MULITY VITAMIN once a day (i take one close to bedtime). VERY important if you think you are not eating like you should be.
meriellyn 12-17-07, 03:47 PM Yeah, I'll admit I'm not upset by my decreased appetite either. I try to make sure I eat often enough too keep me from feeling lousy and try to make the healthiest choices I can. I keep track of what/when/and how much I eat just to make sure I'm eating enough to be ok.
I gained a lot of weight a couple years ago for various reasons and I've had a very hard time getting any off and an impossible time keeping it off. I'm happy that I don't have the urge to emotional eat all day anymore and I have to focus and drive to make it to the gym without over doing it (I usually overdo it for a while then fall off completely again). I had started eating less shortly before starting my latest med and it has helped me stick with it.
I think I need to get a protein suppliment again though (used to drink one often a while back and did well with it) because I'm having a hard time getting enough protein in on my own during the week.
Addywhack 12-17-07, 04:32 PM I try to buy ensure (the one that says "to gain or sustain weight"). It comes in a few flavors. My favorite is Homemade vanilla shake. Loaded with fat and good vitamins. Havent heard of any bad effects from ensure, just expensive. Too bad cause I could drink 10 a day. No Joke. When not hungry, i can always down an ensure. Give it a try.
lost_in_texas 01-07-08, 01:13 PM It tends to be stuff like sandwiches, soup, TV dinners, cereal when I can't cook. But it's a lot of the same things I ate before I started the drug, except I usually only eat once a day. The only thing that's really changed is that I only drink water now, but if I do go out to eat, I may drink a Diet Coke.
A few days ago, I went to visit my doctor, who noted that I've lost 15 pounds in one month. Right now, my weight is around 135. I'm 5'10", so I'm not underweight at all, but he did suggest that I try to eat during the day or possibly drink Ensure. And then he said something about being at risk for anemia with rapid weight loss. So, I've been trying to eat some things during the day now.
I will admit that I don't mind the side effect of appetite supression at all. Like a lot of you, it's helped me make adopt better eating habits when I do eat.

135lbs at 5'10 is technically borderline underweight. If thats naturally the way your body type is (like me - 5'9", 120lbs), then it's fine.
But you're definitely considerably below 'average' for your height.
well, no appetite for me means I eat nothing.
jimmyk000 01-31-08, 09:11 AM Sometimes I'll get home from work and think, "I should probably eat something today", then I will think about it a realize that I haven't eaten anything in 3 days. I try to remember as best I can, but my life is so busy that without the actual feeling of hunger, I just simply don't eat.
pollyweather 01-31-08, 10:11 AM I've only been taking Adderall for a few days, but if ANYthing I just fix myself a small bowl of cereal.
Soups and protein shakes for me.
Hutch1ns 01-31-08, 02:03 PM Wow, you people eat like birds! I eat a lot less on 100mg/day of Adderall than I did before, and this is what I usually eat everyday:
Morning: Sleep
Afternoon/Evening Usually half of a Large Italian style 16" pizza or a Large roastbeef sandwich or a 4LB chicken parm dinner or a Large Grilled chicken sub
Between 12-2am: Either the rest of the Large Pizza or 10 chicken nuggets from Wendys and then some fruit right after (strawberries/oranges/cut up apples/grapes.)
Before bed (6am usually): Pancakes or waffles, a bowl of ice cream, more fruit, and maybe a donut or two (yes all of those things before bed.)
If you have trouble sleeping and are having trouble eating, I strongly recommend a low dose of serequel to solve both of those issues. Serequel makes you crave food, especially carbs. It also makes you drowsy. I take 50mg of Serequel 2 hours before bed and then 50mg of Trazadone 30 minutes before bed. I'm 5'9 165Lbs and no I don't gain any weight from eating all of that (and all of that is like a fifth of what I used to eat when I didn't take Adderall.) I've never once in my life been anything close to overweight.
meggie5782 01-31-08, 03:21 PM I wish adderall would make me lose my appetite! I haven't lost mine at all and I've been on 40mg for two weeks now. I want to increase my dose but I have to wait until I see my psych next month. I'm on adderall for concentration and impulse control when it comes to binging.
I don't know, I just wish I could have a normal appetite and not obsess about food all the time!
adhdogwalker 01-31-08, 11:38 PM I am so busy during the day that I rarely have time to eat. I try to have some fruit or nuts as a snack and then try to eat a well-balanced dinner. I try to eat a high protein diet as it gives me lots of energy to make it through a long day of dogwalking. I also eat some ice cream every night so I don't lose too much weight. In addition to 80-100 mg. of Adderall, I also take 350 mg. of Seroquel and, believe it or not, it does not make me hungry.
air popped popcorn with ff butter spray - different seasonings or i eat it plain- depends but you have to eat.

meggie- when i first started adderall i had a slightly decreased appetite but now it is normal for me most of the time unless i have a stressful day in which then i have not appetite but that was normal for me before. I have not lost any weight on it...which is ok. i think about food a lot too...if you already have issues with food give it some time...
ben72227 02-04-08, 02:55 PM Lots of gatorade/water (to keep my electrolytes balanced and keep my hydrated).
Also, small snacks - popcorn, muffins, rice crispies treats, etc.
I know it's hard - but you really need to eat because your immune system will get weak (and that's the last thing you want this time of year what with the flu and colds going around).
Bananas and oatmeal.
Since I haven't lost my appetite lately, which is great, I haven't done it a lot but sometimes I just filled the blender with fruits, milk or yogourt.
I would LOVE a blentec by the way :D

You must have a great amount of muscle on your frame if you're 165lbs @ 5'9 and not even *close* to being overweight. What kind of training do you do?
I ask this because I personally have always been very thin. I'm 5'8 1/2 and only around 120 pounds. While I see myself as lean, I definitely have decent muscle tone, and don't look emaciated or anything. To keep what muscle I *do* have on my body, I do resistance training and kick boxing. Sometimes I lift.
Anyway, you should measure your body fat percentage with calipers or a bioelectrical impedance scale. That will give you a good perspective of how in-shape you are.

I've REALLY good genes. My Mom's 47 5'9 135 and My Dad's 47 5'11 205Lbs. My Dad's got less than 8% body fat and looks like he could be in one of those muscle man magazines if he'd shave his chest. My Mom's Father (my Grandfather) is in better shape than most 30 year olds, he kicked my butt in Tennis when I went down to Florida to see him a few months ago.
165lbs puts me at the high normal range for a 5'9 male. I haven't done any cardio in quite awhile. I haven't done much on the weight lifting either for years. During my junior year of high school I was up to 190lbs eating about 10K calories a day, lifting 6 days a week atleast 90 minutes a day and playing hockey 6 days a week. I had basically no fat on me and I was taking the Adderall on and off but only 30mg on school days if I took it. I still have the muscle tone from back then but I've lost a good amount of muscle mass. I haven't grown at all since freshmen year of high school but prior to sophmore year of high school I was always thin as rail. I think I weighed about 115lbs in the middle of freshmen year and was 160 by the time sophmore year started.
I guess I'm just lucky to have good genes... 120Lbs at 5'9 by the way is actually a little underweight, you may want to try and put on 5 or 10lbs. I believe that puts your BMI around 17.7 which is a little underweight. Normal range BMI is 18.5-24.9. Mines about 24.5.
dlmay277 02-04-08, 11:51 PM How long after you started taking did you notice the total lack of appetite?
butterfly67 02-05-08, 03:52 PM I eat Protein Shakes, Granola Bars, Fruit Bars, cereal, Toast, peanut butter sandwiches,Crackers, chips ( not too good for you) small meals: like tuna, yogurt, salads. Not very much at one time, but they say small meals a better then big meals. Just eating "something" ( as long as it is pretty good for you) is good. And drinking lots of water!
dlmay277 02-05-08, 04:10 PM I have been on for 10 days now, and I do notice that I am less hungry at certain times of the day... but I feel my blood sugar dropping since I have always had that problem... but when I eat, I can't eat as much as I normally would. Not an issue for me, haha. I had a baby 6 months ago, and still need to get rid of the last 25 pounds that just dont seem to want to leave.. and before I started Adderall, I was on an emotional/stress eating schedule... and was eating too much sugar. I do notice that when eating sugar, I start to feel tired sooner?
civicmon 02-08-08, 11:05 PM I hardly eat anymore.. which isn't a bad thing since I've lost a boatload of weight. I was nearly 300lbs so....
The typical routine:
Something -very- light in the AM. I'm talking a breakfast bar or a donut.
MAYBE lunch. Something usually light in that case, Italian sandwich, side salad.
Dinner is usually a bit bigger but not much. Tonight I had some beef stew that my mom made but it was a bit small by anyone's standards.
Yesterday I had two real meals (ok, if you want to call them meals):
I had a 6-piece nugget meal at lunch and a 12" cheesesteak for dinner. Probably the first time since I started taking 60mg XL that I've eaten two "real" meals.
I also drink a ton of water, upwards of 2 litres.
When i'm hungry but just need to take the edge off... Pretzels. Helps that I live near the pretzel capital of the USA.
And my mom owns a bakery.. :)
Protein shakes are the best. Sometimes (even when I'm not on Adderall) I'm just too lazy to eat because I can find it annoying having to chew -- as silly as it sounds. But when I do take my medicine and I know I should eat, the protein shake is the easiest and probably best way to go. It takes ~ 4 minutes to prepare it, 2-3 minutes to chug, and like 30 seconds to rinse off. Make sure you have a handheld blender though, and be sure to get rid of any un-mixed pieces of whey. My shakes provides me with about 40 grams of protein, which is 2/3's the daily reccommended value. If you go to GNC, Optimum Nutrition makes the best protein powder for your buck! It's incredibly popular with bodybuilders because you get so much protein at a low price.
Just did some quick research -- it's ~20 dollars for 30 servings of 24 grams of protein. Mix two servings of whey protein (48 grams of protein) plus 2 cups of milk (15-20 grams depending on perentage), and you have fulfilled your body! However, your body cannot actually take in that much protein at once, so best to split it up into two drinks a couple of hours apart.
