View Full Version : Adderall is aggrivating Acid Reflux

I have acid reflux (severe) and I had to take Nexium to get it under control. I don't take the adderall everyday because I work part time, so I had some relief when I didn't take it.

As soon as I took my 20mg of Adderall I had a horrible metallic taste in my mouth (which has never happened before). Then today I have the acid reflux again.

I was thinking about taking the adderall in a different way other than swallowing it into the stomach. Like using a suppository method. However, if this approach will still cause acid reflux symptoms, then there would be no point in trying it.

There is another way and that is to leave it under the tongue and let it dissolve. I just wonder if these two methods will bypass my stomach, so it won't cause the acid reflux to act up?

I'm not trying to abuse this med, I'm just trying to find another way to continue my med until this stomach problem is resolved. I'm at my wits end with this acid reflux, and I will choose not to take adderall over having to deal with this horrible knot in my stomach and throat. But then I will lose my job. I can't accomplish much, if anything without the adderall.

I've been on adderall for about a year and that is not the initial cause of the acid reflux, it just irritates my stomach like spicy foods do.

Has anyone tried to bypass the stomach, due to stomach problems, and if you have does it work and alleviate the discomfort?

Please help!

I would suggest that you contact your Dr. or pharmacist concerning this issue.

I hope that you will keep us posted on what you find out about this.

My doctor told me to quit the Adderall, and not use it as a suppository. He also said there is no medical evidence to prove or disprove weather using it in that way would help or hurt.
He feels the main reason Adderall is not made in suppository form is due to the abuse connected with the medication. He stated that suppository medication is absorbed quicker than oral medication, which would cause a quick boost.

I asked for a different stimulant that may not be as harsh on the stomach, and he said they would all do the same thing.

Don't use it as a suppository, for goodness sake.

You could overdose yourself, for starters.

Rectal blood supply is extremely efficient. (This is how some drug abuser doctors take drugs, FWIW.)

You dont want to be messed up and high if you are going to "work" too. :S

I would simply take it with a full meal. Take it in the middle of your meal so there is food in front of and behind it.

The best way to stop this is to ALWAYS take it w/ food.

Do you normally have reflux?

Are you overweight or do you drink a lot of coffee or smoke? Those can boost your stomach acid, too. [Being overweight makes the epiglottis floppy due to too much tissue around the omentum.]

oh, and don't lie flat or use alcohol after taking pills. that also makes them come back for a second round. :S

Have you considered trying a more alkaline based diet?

Perhaps the food that you eat is acidifying your body and the root of your problems...

I have always had ulcers with a lot of pain and occasional spitting up. I would simply take Prilosec and within a week it was gone.

This time around is another story. I had severe indigestion everyday that was so bad, with a horrible knot in my throat, and constant salivation. When I bent over I would spit up. I wanted to pull my hair out and scream "Help Me"

I started out with taking Pepcid AC for a week and no relief. I then switched to Prilosec for a week and had only two days of relief. On the third day I ate first, then took the Adderall and it came back.

I called my doctor and asked for Nexium. The second day on Nexium I had some relief but the third day I took my dose of Adderall and it all started back up. I called my doctor and they increased my Nexium and took blood samples as they felt there may be something esle wrong due to some vomiting. Lab isn't back yet.

I think the initial cause of this acid reflux was taking a handful of vitamins and supplements everyday. Two weeks prior to the acid reflux starting I added the potassium pill, and I think it was the cause.

I have been taking Advil everyday for over 10 years due to headaches from a car accident where my skull was fractured. I also have arthritis. (This probably was a precursor, but not the cause) I quit the Advil and I'm currently taking Tylenol, which is like taking baby aspirin.

The doctor told me to quit the Advil and Adderall until the Nexium gets it under control. At that point the lab will be back and we can see how to handle this.

I don't smoke and never have. My weight is normal for my height. I only have one glass of tea a day and I don't drink coffee. Sometimes I substitute the soda for tea and try not to drink more than two caffeine drinks a day.

I was scared to ask the doctor because I knew he would advise against it without giving me a reason. But I decided to ask some basic questions about it.

I can't work with out the Adderall and this has been really tough not being able to take it.

Thanks for your replies

Yes, I've changed my diet. No more chocolate, no mint, no spicy food especially pepper. I stopped the Advil and no more soda or carbonated beverages. I've been eating mostly vegetables. Eliminating these things doesn't seem to make a difference though. It's the Adderall.

Thanks for the link

Sorry to hear you're having these problems. Such a bummer.
Are you taking Adderall on an empty stomach?
Maybe if you ate something starchy (like crackers/ a banana/ oatmeal /potatoes/ bread) first, then take it your stomach may do better.
It's never good to take medication/vitamins on an empty stomach anyway- especially if one is sensitive.
The alkaline diet is a great idea, works wonders in ones health.

At first I didn't eat before taking Adderall I would just drink tea in the morning. I just can't eat before 10:00 am for some reason.

After this acid reflux started then I figured I better force myself to eat something before I took it. I'm currently not taking the medication and trying to get the acid reflux under control. I've been eating better and I didn't have any problems with it today. I believe I will have to wait another 2 weeks with no symptoms before I can try the Adderall again.

In the mean time I am going to try the alkaline diet and continue to cut out the Advil, chocolate, carbonated drinks.

Thanks for everyones replies
