I've been on Adderall XR 10mg for little less then a month and have experienced mild chest pains around the heart area and other places as well. So I've researched a little bit and came to the conclusion that many others have had same side effects. I then called my friend who is a cardiologist and he as well said that he has MANY patients complaining about Adderall and chest pains, and that he suggest i should do a EKG. Now the interesting thing is that the 4 amphetamine salts that adderall contains one of them is L-amphetamine. And this is what i found about this specific salt. I am sure there is more info on it but this was something that caught my eye. Pulled from medical online dictionary.
l Amphetamine

The l-form has less central nervous system activity but stronger cardiovascular effects. The d-form is DEXTROAMPHETAMINE.

Now If this is true then what was Shire thinking to put this ampetamine in adderall? Why did Canada ban adderall ? I am sure no-one of us want a "strong" stimulant on their cardiovascular system. I guess that would explain the deaths caused by adderall on the first place. I feel stupid i haven't researched this before even taking it for 3 weeks.

Now the D-form
Dextroamphetamine

The d-form of AMPHETAMINE.

Dextroamphetamine has multiple mechanisms of action including blocking uptake of adrenergics and dopamine, stimulating release of monamines, and inhibiting monoamine oxidase.

Anyways, i have an appointment today with my doctor and i am deffenitly switching to dextroampetamine.
Good luck to everyone.

*UPDATE*

Today i had my EKG everything seems to be normal my blood pleasure is higher then normal but thats about it. I do feel still the uncomfortable feeling close to the heart caused by adderall. I talked to the doctor about l-amphetamine in adderall and he confirmed that the L is the left side and it has alot more effects on the cardiovascular system then it should, and that the d-amphetamine is the real thing that causes the benefits. He also gave me a prescribtion for the d-amphetamine (dexedrine). He also said that they might be more potent then adderall, so i am definitely happy with all the outcome, starting dex tomorrow. It was nice hanging out in the adderall forum :)
PEACE out 2 everyone

That's good! Why does everyone take adderall if dexedrine is what works anyways? Hmm.

And yeah, my darn heart too. Lowish blood pressure and really high heart rate, can't be healthy! Plus sometimes I get chest pains and I get "butterfly" heart palpitations as well as long lasting heart palpitations being trcholclyblahblah whatever work meaning my heard is in the 120's-130's. I'm told by my doctor though that I'm not going to have a heart attack or anything. Haven't had an EKG in years though.

This is a my 10cents worth response but there are things you can do to reduce to problems associated with Adderall. For cardio, consider taking L-carnitine 500mg -1000mg daily. There is plenty of literature on the internet as to it's benefit. You should also eat a healthy diet and take up an excercise regimen if you can. One tip however, never excercise within 3 hours of taking adderall. Though you can move mountains on the tread mill after taking a dose, the blood vessel constriction brought on from the first few hours of adderall is a real stress on your body and heart. I've benefited more by waiting at least four hours after taking it. Charles of East Texas

I haven't noticed any chest pains myself, but this does make me wonder, and worries me about the long-term effects on the heart. It's easy to avoid the topic because they say it hasn't really been around long enough to know...

Problem is Adderall has been very helpful. It's so much become part of my life I've not been thinking clearly about other stresses I've been putting on my heart... coffee for example. Rather than look at this as an alarmist reaction let's just say that I'm curious.

I would be interested in hearing some others thoughts on the subject and where the drug company has any additional writings on the matter. Can you even ask the company the question?

Thx.

I'm pretty sure Adderall has been quite awhile. My doc referred to it as "an oldie but a goodie".

Technically, cheeseburgers are really bad for your heart. I don't see any going out of business signs in McDonalds though. :p

*Side note: Dexedrine did not work the same for me as Adderall. I switched back to Adderall.

A couple of other thing to take into consideration (definitely not discounting you checking out your heart):

1) Adderall can make acid reflux worse. This can cause heartburn which can easily be mistaken for heart problems.

2) Adderall can increase anxiety in some people. Anxiety can lead to chest pains and high blood pressure.

But you may very well be on the right track. I think Adderall can also cause high blood pressure by itself. But I just wanted to give you a couple of other possibilities to take into consideration. ;)

Re: adderall making acid reflux worse.

I had heard this often since I started on meds but I never looked into it as much as I should have. Now I'm a total believer that this is true because since I started on Prilosec 3 weeks ago I have not had a single chest pain. Before I had pain on the left side of my chest and sometimes even in my back every day that I took adderall. I just didn't know it was heartburn because I didn't feel any burning in my throat, and I didn't know that heartburn can present as just chest pain.

So I thought I was having some heart related side effects from adderall, but it turns out I'm not. Never had palpitations or flutters, and my bp is still very low (upper number under 100 and lower number ranges between 65 and 78).

That said, that was just my experience, and if you think you're having chest pains, don't listen to me or anyone else. The only real way to know is to get it checked out.

One of the biggest problems with Adderall when you first start taking it is the appetite suppression. Because the appetite is suppressed people don't eat and they end up with an empty stomach which can result in acid reflux.

My remedy (now I have no appetite issues) was to eat a big breakfast when I would take my meds. This would keep the heartburn at bay.

It could be muscle tension as well. I had a lot of physical effects while taking adderall. The tension would build and be worse later in the day. Reducing my dose of adderall helped alot. I also tried taking a beta blocker which worked well, but long term it led to too much alpha stimulation (sweating and vaso-constriction).
