Hello all. I just lost my insurance and currently have a prescription for Adderall XR 30 mg. I got a refill right before the insurance expired, though, so I'm good to go for almost a month. I haven't really cared for the quality of Adderall - I usually have to take twice the amount prescribed because the dose becomes ineffective a little past noon. I'm not sure if it's that 30 mg isn't enough - It seems having a fast metabolism may affect the effectiveness of XR?

After reading through the forum it seems the general concensus is dexedrine is just as good, if not better than Adderall.

I have a concern, though. Will switching from Adderall XR to an instant release pill make any large difference? It seems 1 mg Adderall = ~1 mg dextroamphetamine; does the XR change that at all?

It also seems that Mallinckrodt 5 mg IR pills are the most effective dexedrine for the price? Does anyone know of any chains that carry it? I get my XR from Walgreens, but it seems these pharma companies have contracts with the chain pharmacies. I live in Madison, WI if that helps any.

I haven't gone to the doctor (and I probably won't since I'll get reamed with a bill), but I will discuss it with him in the near future (switching to dexedrine).

Oh yeah one last thing, assuming my doctor switches me over to dexedrine, do I have to tell him "yeah I want Mallinckrodt brand" or is that dependent on which pharmacy you take it to? Do I have to ask the pharmacy to give me a specific brand?

Thanks.

Call around to pharmacies and tell them you have a prescription and want to have that particular brand. I get mine from a mom and pop pharmacy so I can get the brand I ask for.

I took adderall for a while is sucks compared to the generic dex tabs 10mg I take now. Dex is better. Adderall is insanely expensive and dex varied by over $100 (!!!!) for 90ct/10mg depending on the pharmacy. Rite Aid was the cheapest at $44 w/no insurance.

I paid 29 bucks for 90 pills/5mg Dexedrine.

My insurance covered Adderall XR, but I still paid 25 bucks for a 30 day supply of 30mg XR.

All scripts filled at Target.

Look into Costco. You don't need a membership to use their pharmacy. You can get either generic Dexedrine or generic Adderall IR for $30-40 on average for a one month supply (with no insurance).

Barr generic dexedrine is ~$15 for 90x 10mg tabs at Walmart. Generic Adderall IR is slightly more. iirc, Costco and Walmart pharmacies had the lowest prices.

Costco was unable to fill an Adderall IR Rx I had instantly, but offered to order the drugs (I just went to Walmart's pharmacy instead). You may have to check availability.

My roommate gets Adderall IR, and the on-campus pharmacy at the university here is even cheaper than Walmart, but I believe that's because it is subsidized and you must be a student to use it; not sure though.

If you want a specific brand, that's a pharmacy issue, not a doctor one.

The last time I went to Walmart pharm, I paid about $36 for that same exact prescription (90 x 10mg Barr dex tabs). No insurance.
