I'd probably feel neglected, upset, insecure?

Thing is though, and there's no way around this - people just need that separate part of their lives. Like if a guy is thoughtless and doesn't tell his gf his plans, she feels hurt, she gets mad at him, he's confused (what are you so upset about?), then he gets defensive (why can't I have my own life?), and the whole thing sort of balloons into something big.

There's always stuff to fight about.. unfortunately. You kind of have to pick your battles so you're not actually always fighting.

But yeah, I'd try to find a non-accusatory/ nonconfrontational way to talk about what you'd both like in the communication department. Wouldn't worry about the bar too much, but focus on your feelings/ priorities/ expectations.. so you at least know where the other person is coming from/ expecting in return.
