View Full Version : Smoking before testing?

I smoke about 10 cigarettes a day and it could very well be that some of my symptoms have reduced a bit. Since I started smoking 10 months ago I've had a bit more succes socially. Could nicotine be the cause of that? I've always figured I just developed my social skills a bit. My social life and social skills still sucks, but there's been a bit of improvement. I've had more succesful conversations in 2007 than the entire rest of my life!

Anyway, I haven't been diagnosed (yet), but the first part of my test (for concentration/attention) is in 2 days. Could my smoking have an influence on the results? If so, when is the best time for my last cigarette before the test? 1-2 hours? A day?

I used to smoke and I can say that it did help me focus and remember things just a bit better. I quit because smoking also made me feel sick to my stomach sometimes and I also felt like a hopeless slave. I quit cold turkey and I have been nicotine free for 6 months and 3 weeks.

As far as when to smoke? I would assume you smoke when you have the craving to smoke because if you force yourself to smoke or you abstain just for the test, your results will be wrong. If you smoke only when you have a craving, your body will function normally. Believe it or not, but if you aren't getting "high" from smoking, then you likely have developed a tolerance and hence, you will be performing at the exact same level that you did before you smoked. When I got used to smoking, I noticed that I did just as bad in school and my social life as I did before I smoked.

Tell your tester about your smoking habit.

Addiction (esp to a dopamine boosting drug like nicotine, hello!) can help with diagnosis when they do your History taking.

I would definitely tell my Tester/Doctor if I used Nicotine to help Focus. It's diagnostic, actually.
