lanaxx..welcome :-)
I have tried both...I found the dex good for keeping me calm, and the ritalin for very good focus..they are both effective

good luck

Dex makes me more calm inside (less wandering) .. I can even sleep on it very well and deep. And it feels gentler. Ritalin feels more focused, "business-like", but has the side effect of making me a bit light headed now & then. For ritalin, I prefer a smaller dose (3 or 4 x 10), on dex I use 3 of 4 x 7.5 or 10 (it's twice as strong as ritalin).

Indeed, they're both effective. But I think I'll go for the dex.

It's hard to say who will win, because it boils down to an individuals own preference. It's kind of like asking who will win, the Big Mac or the Whopper?

I have taken both of these two medications individually, and I have taken them in combination with each other under my Dr's supervision. The reason for me taking a dose of amphetamine with a smaller dose of methylphenidate is that it allowed me to achieve a lower effective dose for each drug due to the "synergistic" effect of combining those two drugs.

For example, Dexedrine is believed to be a potent dopamine against, which means that it improves the activity of dopamine. Ritalin on the other hand is believed to be a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, which means that it prevents the re-uptake of dopamine from the dopamine saturated synaptic clefts. By combining these two drugs together I was able to take an overall lower dose due to the fact that the methylphenidate was actually preventing the re-uptake of the dopamine that the dextroamphetamine had directly or indirectly activated.

It's important to remember that we each can respond so differently to these medications, that it really varies from one person to the next as to what might work best for them. It's also important to remember too that the whole point of my Dr & me wanting to do this experiment was to try and achieve a lower effective daily dose of stimulants. We did just that.

For example, my normal dose of Dexedrine is 20 mg per dose. However I learned that by taking 10 mg of Dexedrine along with 5 mg of Ritalin that the end result was the same if not better than taking 20 mg of Dexedrine all by itself.

This is not the kind of thing that most Dr's would probably want to try until a patient has had plenty of experience with both of these medication. I had taken each of these two drugs for several years prior to asking my Dr if I could try them in combination. I got the idea from a member here at the forums named "Master Rat." It was his idea that this combo could work, and he and his Dr found out that it did indeed work as predicted. It was after reading his post that I felt compelled to ask my Dr about trying it out.

I prefer Dexedrine over Ritalin when picking just one.

From the massive amounts of what I've heard on this forum, I so badly want to try dexamphetamine... poor me, my psychiatrist is an asshat.

I would prefer Dexedrine myself, but having tried neither, I will follow my Dr's advice on this one. The reason for Dex is I have heard it is calmer & smoother rebound.
I am all for smooth come down and a calmer more less jittery ( if it is that) ride.

I first had one like that too - she did not want to prescribe any stimulants bc she was "just against them" - and went to another psych that an ADD woman that I met recommended. Can't you go see another one?

I think that Russel Barkley wrote in an article that amphetamines and low dosages of ritalin work better with inattentive ADD-ers while mixed type ADHD people do better on higher dosages of ritalin ..?
