Need Help with Dex and Celexa, migrane nausea

Dear all,

Maybe someone can help me!? I am already taking Dextroamphetamine for some time, works well. Now I should start a combination therapy with Celexa (Citalopram). But it does not work. After taking Celexa I get very strong headaches and nausea. I thought it would just be in the first weeks, but it doesn't stop and it is almost unbearable.

The same happens when I take Ritalin with Celexa. It has nothing to with the stomach, because it starts some after some hours. My doctor suggested this therapy and did not see an interaction, but I won't see her for weeks. I also saw othoers in this forum getting treated with this combination...

Now my questions:

Does anyone know why this happens?
Has anybody experience with this combination, Stimulant and SSRI?
What other SSRI would be better suited?

Thanks guys! :)

Nausea caused 4% of Citalopram users to stop using it.

If you go off the dexedrine can you tolerate Celexa?

Yes, without a problem - the mix is the problem. Same with Ritalin

You might so better on something like Cymbalta (which is an SSNRI). It's said to help more with physical symptoms and cause fewer. I've never taken it myself though.

I have taken Celexa though. Hated it. I constantly felt crappy. And I was taking it alone.

Personally, I'm not a big SSRI fan so besides maybe the Cymbalta I don't have any reccommendations, sorry.
I'm assuming the Celexa is for co-existing depression? If so, the only anti-depressant I found to work well for me was Welbutrin (well, and Lamictal but that one isn't all that widely accepted as a uni-polar antidepressant yet, although support for this is growing). SSRIs always made me feel like crap.
I haven't combined Welbutrin and a stim but I have taken lots of other meds and never had a problem with interactions. Same with Lamictal, but I have taked it with stimulants and have no problem at all (except with Concerta but I think that would have given me headaches on its own).

I wouldn't go off a med that's been working well for you for a med that causes unpleasant side effects. I'd definitely look into changing the new med that's causing problems instead.

What are you taking the SSRI for?

I'm on Celexa and Dexedrine with no side effects.

You might want to try another SSRI to see if it is just the Celexa that is causing this. Lexapro would be a good option as it is pretty much exactly the same as Celexa with very little side effects reported. Prozac is good too.

Stimulants plus Serotonin (SSRI; SNRI) interactions have caused problems for a number of people here.

Dexedrine is an antidepressant (a secondary effect is mild mood elevation; it was originally developed as an antidepressant pre WW2).

Given that you may be able to go off the Serotonin antidepressants.
