View Full Version : dexamphetamine at bed time?
optimus86 01-18-08, 05:02 AM My psychiatrist recommends taking a small dose of dexamphetamine when i go to bed, he believes it will help with quality of sleep. allowing me to wake up refreshed and well rested, ready to take on the day.
Has anyone tried this?
In my mind the brain needs this time at night to 'come down' from the daily dosages to make sure tolerance doesn't become too much of an issue.
What do people think?
I also take Zyprexa and Sodium Valproate.
Crazy~Feet 01-18-08, 05:15 AM I always sleep better medicated, personally. When I lay down, the Remote Control Gremlin likes to take over. He has the remote control to my mental "TV" and switches channels constantly ;)...and dex stops his little games. This is not uncommon, many people here report the same effect.
~boots~ 01-18-08, 05:25 AM I seriously should try that too...
ADDitional 01-18-08, 11:54 AM I don't take it before bed, but I have no problems falling asleep. I'm pretty sure dex actually makes falling asleep easier for me.
WHY IS THIS NO THE NUMBER ONE ADD MEDICATION?!!?!
WHY IS THIS NO THE NUMBER ONE ADD MEDICATION?!!?!
Well, I can appreciate how you feel about that, but there really is no number one ADD medication.
However, there certainlly is a number one ADD medication for ADDitional, one for lars, and for sneezy, sleepy, grumpy, etc.
It really just boils down to whatever works best for each person as to what the real number one ADD medication actually is. ;)
QueensU_girl 01-18-08, 01:54 PM I think stimulants can increase limb movements in sleep (PLMs/periodic limb movements). This might fragment sleep (boosting daytime alertness/attention issues).
SSRIs (and a few other drugs) can boost PLMs too.
Here is an article about PLMs and SDB (sleep disordered breathing) and it's relation to Attentional issues.

QueensU_girl 01-18-08, 01:55 PM Still, do what works for you. :) You are the expert on yourself, right? If taking it before bed helps, then maybe there's something to it.
Matt S. 01-18-08, 02:59 PM An evening spansule dose allows me to stop thinking so I can sleep.
optimus86 01-18-08, 03:01 PM I only went back on dexamphetamine 2-3 days ago. For me this medication is 'the' medication. I haven't tried any other ADD medications and don't think i ever will. The almost immediate transformation i go through on this drug is phenomenal.
I haven't tried the bed time dosing yet, and last night i woke up 3-4 hours after my last dosage of dex wore off. Does anyone think it may have been a slight rebound effect?
I am interesting in peoples opinions on medication that may help take the edge off the anxiety i experience and aid falling asleep. The Zyprexa makes me feel too numb. Anyone experienced with low doses of Seroquel? I'm only really interested in options that aren't abusable.
Any input welcome... I'm so glad i found this place, i have been in denial for the entire 3 or 4 months that I've been diagnosed.
ADDitional 01-18-08, 03:56 PM What I meant lars is that doctors push adderall, and now that it's going generic, vyvanse. Why don't doctors just talk about all options of medication, because when I first went, my doc just prescribed me adderal, no other options, until I said it wasn't working.
Luthien 01-18-08, 04:05 PM Funny, this .. I wrote some time ago that I discovered by accident that I slept so wonderful on dexedrine .. had taken one upon getting up and decided to go back to bed after taking a shower. It was a wonderfully peaceful and deep sleep.

This is one thing that I really like about Dex. It's very responsive to the way that I behave.
The down side to that is it can be very difficult to unwind after a long morning of sorting and loading packages.
Luthien 02-01-08, 08:39 PM I took a 10 mg spansule last night to see how that would influence my sleep. Result: like a log until 5 am, then woke up, but that felt ok. Was awake for some time ... quite relaxed .. and then fell asleep again. When I awoke I was way more active and energetic than usual.
Iv tried that before put me to sleep then once the second dose kicked in woke me up and i couldnt fall back asleep, so I prob wont do it again.
flatlinez 02-07-08, 01:56 PM I think it actually improves my dreaming a little, but I can't say for sure. It definitely helps to take a small amount if my mind is being particularly unquiet. Actually, I feel like going to sleep at a reasonable time now, since I started Dexedrine. I think it must help with impulse control and so I can send myself to bed while I'm still feeling sleepy. If I wait too long then I get agitated and that can help to keep me up.
How do those of you that use it to assist sleep time the dose? Do you take it an hour before you plan on hitting the sack? Or take it right as you are going to sleep? Or something else?
flatlinez 02-11-08, 11:53 AM Well, I actually take it a half hour before getting up out of bed. This allows me to wake up much better and easier so that I'm not always late in the mornings. I have noticed that when I sleep in, and so end up taking it an hour to an hour and a half early, that my dreams are more vivid and coherent.
