Anyone else like me struggle with TV and/or Internet addiction? It's a problem though because it keeps me from getting things done at work or home. Any suggestions on how to break this kind of addiction? I read somewhere that visual-spatial learners, (who happen to have ADD) like me can easily become addicted to visual stimuli.

p.s. I must be drawn to it because it allows me to calm and focus my brain on something visually stimulating.

I was brought up in front of a TV and constantly in front of a screen, I can definitely relate to what you said about "it allows me to calm and focus", internally my mind is extremely active, always have a song playing the background, painting pictures, looking for patterns all of this I'm doing at the moment whilst replying and listening to others talking, I also find patterns in peoples speech and try and pain pictures of they're past and the way that they think constantly, to be honest it kinda makes me sick because I'm constantly doing it and I don't want to. I think because I was always in front of a TV screen I need a lot of visual stimulation and if i don't get it I make it up by painting mental pictures, since I'm a computer student people pretty much expect me to be in front of a computer screen all the time (as well as being extremely boring) which is why I think no ones pointed it out to me but I do think that, though I wouldn't call it an addiction it might be close to getting that way or even is one considering my reaction to calling it an addiction is defensive.

I have to also add I despise that signature of yours, no offense to you but it ticks me off considerably but thats just me.

what do you mean you despise his signature?! I don't get that. Anyway, I have the same problem. When at home(like I am a lot because I have no job right now) I'm either using the internet or watching TV(usually TV is at night). I'm not productive and I need help!

I like the signature (not that it matters...lol).

I am a major TV and internet addict, but I don't think it has to do with ADD. I didn't start watching TV until around 5 years ago. I'm also addicted to video games too! ugh.

Hi T-bird,

So are you an outdoor enthusiast by chance? Since you live "In the Woods". Fortunately I don't have a video game console or that could be another addiction on top of the TV & Internet.

Definately Internet addiction. I hardly watch TV except late at night to help fall asleep and early in the morning.

But I cannot be without internet and spend mostly all of my time at home online even when I am eating dinner.

I've learned to use my compulsion to use the internet as an advantage. I find that if I think about things by saying "If I do my homework, I'll reward myself by getting on the internet the rest of the day," I can get more done.

I love the outdoors in the summer, but I am a total shut-in during the winter. Hence the TV, internet, and video game addiction. :D

We're exactly alike in this regard. I'm planning to go on a weeklong hike in the California Sierras this July with one of my friends from Sacramento.

May I please direct your attention to the initial post - this would be the portion of this thread which out lines the intended topic which is

TV & Internet addiction

Anyone else like me struggle with TV and/or Internet addiction? It's a problem though because it keeps me from getting things done at work or home. OKay I do not see any where on this post that would indicate the member wanted to discuss his signature.

If you are offended by it you have a few options

#1 - you can PM the person and state your case politely would more than likely be the most effective appraoch -

If you would like to communicate with somebody privately there are both email and private message options built into the forums. There are buttons at the bottom of each post for private messaging if the user has enabled that options. Both options are also available in each person's profile (if user has enabled them)

Spamming is considered repeating your comments unnecessarily, mean spirited criticism, and repetitive arguments.

This also applies to private messages - which can be reported by the member to staff if they are overtly rude or insulting

#2 If you feel someone's signature is in violation of the guidelines you can report it to staff

Due to complaints about signature length and content, we have chosen to adopt the following guidelines for signatures. A Moderator will review any material that generates a complaint

#3 you can ignore it and realize that part of freedom is enhanced by tolerance for difference of expression. . .

Please be respectful to one another. People come from all different backgrounds and many have different ideas and views on different issues

#4 you can place the member on your ignore list

Also remember that members have the option to put other members on ignore. The ignore option may prevent heated arguments and further issues

This concludes this reminder to - {what was I saying oh yea}

Please deal with the signature thing using one of the above mention or some thing similar but appropriate that is not a disruption to a discussion other members are trying to participate in.

Thank you for your attention - I shall now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Its something i have to watch with myself, very easy to plonk myself down in front of the telly or net and lose time. I tend to do it too much when i'm a bit stressed or feel generally $hitty with life. The only answer Brakna, is to just not do it as much. :) You have to be more disciplined, no-one else can do it. Try being stricter with yourself, (but not too hard on yourself either.)

I have always had an addiction to the computer and the internet. When I am even mildly bored I just pop on the net, doesn't even matter if no one is on at the time I am. Sometimes it doesn't even matter about the websites either. Its just I keep checking out different sites, because of the boredom, and sheer addiction of it. Its really hard sometimes when I know things got to get done, but I get pulled in front of the computer saying to myself, just 5 more minutes. And it ends up being more like 30 minutes or longer.

Most of what's on TV is pretty uninteresting, though the History channel and Discovery are neat... I'm getting seriously stuck to the net nowadays... hence my presence on this site.
