View Full Version : Is it boredom, or is it a lack of ability to create something to do?

It seems he's always had a problem with finding things to do. It's as if his ability of creative thinking has never been very good. So instead of coming up with something good to do, he'll come up with a completely wrong thing to do, like color on his furniture rather than color on paper, or whine nonstop to me about being bored when has a million toys in his room. I don't grasp this concept for a couple reasons.

#1, I was always taught that you're only as bored as you want to be. Therefore you have to "think" of things to do. Use your imagination & create something.

#2, my 3 1/2 yr old has an amazing imagination & can occupy herself for hours with new things to do. Very creative, very inventive, rarely if ever "bored".

Why is he like this? Is it just part of the ADHD brain & how it works that he can't slow down enough to figure out something fun & constructive (rather than destructive) to do? Can I help him in this area to be more creative or inventive?

This is related to how the AD/HD mind works. It's probably not that he can't think on anything to do. It's probably that he think of too many things to do. This may overload his brain and he may not know what to do..

Maybe you and your son could brain storm about fun (and reasonable) things he may like to do. Then maybe make some type of chart or list with those things on it. Make it fun and colorful.

When he starts to complain direct him to the chart and ask him to choose 1 thing on the chart. As long as there aren't too many things on the chart this could help him to focus. Instead of the endless possibilties in his mind he will be able to choose from a set number of ideas.

Great ideas. Thanks. I'll try that when he comes home today. :D

Could also be that he has something he wants to do in mind but can't do it, either from rules imposed on him, or circumstances such as no money, not old enough, etc...

That's when my son gets really mad about being bored...

That is really intersting wayward and good Idea Tara.
There is no boredom issues ever around here, even in car rides. My kid keeps sticky notes in the car among piles of weird objects.
My mom always said she could never understand the "I'm Bored"
complaint as we, her kids never said that, but my sisters daughter whom my mother is raising says it. It is so hard for me to concieve being bored even while waiting in lines, I get antsy though if I am in an amusement park waiting in a long line though. I wonder if depressed or people with a tendency toward depression are more likely to feel that way?
I think the list is a super Idea. While I need one to stay focused on the more"boring tasks"
