View Full Version : Am I an Aspie?

Okay, so I'm definately an ADD, 17 year old girl. But recently, I've started to wonder about me being aspargers as well, especially after reading how Asparger people build up notoriously huge obsessions on things.
I've already got some (apparently) Autistic traits of lack of smell, hypersensativity to some things (light, touch, mainly), little memory of childhood, little interest in appearance, an INSANE addiction to swingsets, and a tendacy to verbalize my thoughts.
I also tend to listen to the same music over and over a lot, have problems with hyperfocusing BADLY on anything I do (paintings, homework, even this post!) However, on the other side, I always did daydream up scenarios in my head, as opposed to just organizing things, and I'm fairly certain my (deficiet) social skills are learned in a more ADD-ish "just not observing it" fashion, as opposed to Apargers memorization.

But the biggest thing thats making me think that I have Aspargers, is that I build up an EXTREME obsession with every new videogame, anime(Japanese cartoon) or anything else that I began to like. Infact, I can practically catigorize my life based on the obsessions I had at anytime time. I remember in Grade 4-5, it was the "Zelda" videogame, in grade 6, "Sonic the Hedgehog" (with Neopets.com, Pandas, and the Holocaust we were studying inbetween), in grade 7 to 8, a Gameboy game "Golden Sun", in Grade 9 "Fire Emblem", etc.

More recently, around the start of last April in Grade 11, I became obsessed with learning everything about the Canadian role in World War I (off topic: A super big one, I should add! : O), but I paid very little attention to trench warfare itself, and what was happening during that time beyond what directly affected Canada.
It was essential that these vidoegames had a good storyline, and as well, I've noticed that I keep these obsessions for as long as I can find new things about them. (Fans on the net that draw up pictures of characters, "fanfiction" about videogames, ect) Although I rarely, (never) contributated anything to the fangroup itself, I found everything I could about the thing I was obsessed with. These obsessions can last several months, to a year or two at a time.

One other major thing that I noticed since Grade 7, is that whenever I became obsessed with something, there was always somebody I'd fantasize telling about my obsession to, whenever I thought about it. They were always somebody older then me (teacher, usually), who I'd already mentioned something about what I was obsessed with to before hand. That trait creeps me out about myself a bit.
Basically, it seemed as though I could only concentrate my life on one thing at a time.

How does this compare to your lives, as an Aspie (girls especially) and what do you think?
I'm sorry for the huge ranty-ness of this post, but I'm curious, does this resemble Aspargers to you?

Looking over this post again, would it be appreciated if I shortened this post up and made it less ranty? XD Because I can!

Hi WindySprite, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you have posted. There aren't many people on these forums who have Asperger Syndrome so it may take a while for some of them to respond to your post.

Hi WindySprite, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you have posted. There aren't many people on these forums who have Aspergers Syndrome so it may take a while for some of them to respond to your post.

Plus it will be hard for them to diagnosis anybody on-line. The diagnostics are such if you did not goto an expert on aspergers you might get any of several diagnosis (rarely aspergers) anyway.

I suggest one of the on-line test. The science of the test maybe bad but alot of
people with official diagnosed aspergers have taken it. Ive scored as high as
200 out of 200 (when I exclude things I'm unsure of).

If you'd like to find out more information about Asperger's, you should check out www.wrongplanet.net (http://www.wrongplanet.net). It's a really great forum for people with Aspergerer's and High Functioning Autism, and other autism spectrum disorders (ADHD is considered one by some). My father has Asperger's and I've learned a lot from reading that site. Obsessions are certainly a component of Asperger's, but you can have obsessions without being autistic. Only a specialist would be able to determine if you have Asperger's or not, but if you'd like to talk with people that have it and share your obsessions, wrongplanet is a great place to meet lots of people and learn more about Asperger's in general.
