All,
The PH level of the stomach and also in your entire system has a lot to do with how amphetamines are absorbed. When I take my Dex with sodiumbicarbonate for example it works much better. But in general I am short on magnesium, calcium and potassium which I need to take 3 times a day now my nutritionist proposes....
What is your opinion on that? Any experience???

Well, I've taken Tums while on Dex before. (Not to improve absorption/performance of Dex... it was for heartburn :o)
Anyway, I noticed a slight benefit in terms of how the medication performed. I felt like I had taken maybe an extra 2-3 mg. I believe the med lasted a bit longer than usual too. It was significant but not a *huge* difference. Even if it did make for a vast improvement, personally I wouldn't rely on taking something like that every time I took my meds.
I would suggest that you follow your *physician's* advice before you follow the advice of a nutritionist. I'm not saying to ignore your nutritionist, but I'm strongly suggesting that you tell your physician as soon as you can about everything your nutritionist is recommending that you take. Just my two cents. :)
LittlePrincess,
Thanks for your comments! If you don't trust people right away then we have something in common! :-) So I am also very skeptical about this. And this is certainly not the great solution. But this forum is all about experience, assistance and opinions.
First of all my doc send me to this nutritionist.
If you asked your doc about the heartburn then he would fight the symptoms! That is what they do and that is what they are trained in. He will give you Tums or maybe also the natron or even one of these H2 blockers which convinces your brain not to produce so much gastric acid... (correct me if I am wrong on that)
My nutritionist had experience with ADD folks and said they have almost all acidosis, for some reason that I don't recall, and therefore problems with their meds and of course many more symptoms are believed to be related to that.
I went into a bookshop after that and checked out the newest literature on ADD from two experts very well known here and surprise surprise, potassium and natron are able to increase half life and potency in ritalin and dex. this study was done 1999...
Any more opinions or comments on that???
Anybody?
Trying to change your PH when taking dex just adds another variable to the mix. I like to take it on an empty stomach with plenty of water.
Acidosis is a condition where your blood PH is off and is very serious usually related to respiratory distress or kidney failure - not a nutrtion problem.
Much of the acid/alkaline nutrition info was debunked as junk science. Your Kidney's are extremely good at ajusting the PH of your blood. Acidic urine is just proof your kidney's are functioning well.
Eat fruits + vegetables of course, but not because they effect PH. Eat them for the fiber + anti-oxidants they contain.

I take my meds every day therefore no variables in the mix! I don't know how infrequently you take them. I don't see your point! (Ah, unless you think you can change the ph instantly. Well, thats not the care, takes days or weeks.)
With the right minerals then you see your PH improving from day to day by simply getting PH testing paper strips from the pharmacy.
Acidosis was referring to the acidity of the stomach. I think everybody got that. The serious medical condition Acidosis was not meant, but is anyway directly connected with the ability of the kidneys to maintain the acid-base system by regulating the ph in order not to actually get Acidosis.
Maybe you are right here, lets not care and let the kidney's do the job at least as long as they can thats their job isn't it....
And thank you for actually sharing your experience! Liking to take them on an empty stomach. I wonder why?
How glad I am that you don't have to waste your time on that junk science anymore.

Well, I think the OP was asking about ingesting alkalinizing agents along with his meds.
It IS true that gastrointestinal alkalinizing agents (i.e. Tums, Rolaids, etc) can increase the body's absorption of amphetamines (i.e. Adderall/Dex)... which is why it is often advised to stay away from these products at the same time you are taking your meds.
my reasoning for an empty stomach is because some foods can make your stomach more acid ie. cause heartburn. Also food/drinks containing citric acid etc are bad for the same reason.
The idea is to remove the variable of PH from the equation. Taking dex with water (neutral ph) on an empty stomach translates into a narrower stomach PH range dose after dose.
I guess you could take antacid with every dose of dex, however taking acid reducers occasionally with dex translates to just increasing your dose.
Changing your dose is somthing you should do with doctors help. Titrate up to the correct dose + stick to it.
