Hello everyone,

I've been taking Adderall for quite some time now (year and a half), and to be honest it is no longer fulfilling my needs of slowing down my thought processes enough to absorb and comprehend them. It was quite an excercise to get my doctor, who is a general physician to finally prescribe me Adderall in the first place. It practically took my entire high school career of failing miserably to convince him that I had a problem with concentration and distraction, and once I started Adderall I pulled a 3.5 GPA. I owe my high school graduation to this medication, because I was giving up without it.

This year is different, I'm in college so I dont go to school every day of the week. The Adderall is REALLY starting to get to me, to the point where I can't stand taking it any more than twice a week due to the fact that the come down effects linger and make me extremely jittery, anxious and unable to sleep for 24 hours. I have found through research on these forums and elsewhere that these bad side effects are mainly due to the levo isomer as im sure you are all aware of.

Anyway, here's my dilemma. I really want to give Dexedrine/Dextrostat a shot. It seems like a far superior med, especially for my case.

What is the most widely prescribed version of dexamphetamine so perhaps I can get a little brand recognition going on the next time I visit him? He is pretty old school, has been a family physician for over 20 years so he probably knows about Dexedrine/Dextrostat, but what name is more popularly used amongst physicians?

Thanks for the help.

Dexedrine is "the" name brand for dextroamphetamine. This is the original brand developed after Benzedrine (amphetamine sulfate) in the 30's or 40's.

I believe that many pharmacies would carry the generic IR and generic "spansule" ER versions now. At least Walgreens website references both the brand Dexedrine and the generic in the drug information section.

However, my personal experience is limited to purchasing Adderall XR at the pharmacy so I don't know how available this is at the major chains.

Perhaps he has had a bad experience treating patients with this medication. Perhaps he is just not educated on it, you might think about doing some research and getting him interested enough to look into it. Its one step closer to recieving the treatment you desire, and its worth a shot.

Generic Dex is available everywhere and is much cheaper than adderall, and for me, much more effective. It comes in 5mg and 10mg instant release, not sure about extended release cuz I haven't taken it.

Generic Dex is available everywhere

Not Ontario, only Brand. Which is awesome cause it's covered by default.

I guess the biggest struggle is that my doctor is extremely busy, and has very little time to sit and discuss different options. The longest I have visited him for, and i've been going to him since my conception, was about 15 minutes when blood tests revealed I had contracted West Nile. Even that was a rushed visit.

My biggest concern is that he will either switch me to another med like Ritalin or Strattera (both being big brand names), or he will be totally against Dexedrine like many doctors.

I suppose it's worth a shot either way, its just a factor of cramming as much info into a 2-3 minute time span as I possibly can WITHOUT coming off like a pill junkie which I have a past history of that he is aware of.

Also noteworthy: I have my past of substance abuse behind me so this is not a factor in my decision to switch meds, I've been clean for two years now and I don't even drink. I hardly like taking adderall at all, but I become a manic insect without it, jumping from topic to topic without actually absorbing anything. Sigh.

Go find another doctor. If possible one with experience treating ADD.

That's the next step if this step doesn't pan out. We'll see.

Just curious, is Dexedrine pronounced "dex-uh-dreen" or "dex-uh-drin"?

My psychiatrist calls it 'dex-uh-dreen'

Just an update, my doc prescribed me a 15mg spansules trial for the next month to see how I like it. He ended up being a lot more understanding than i expected, and mentioned that he'd let me try everything till i found the med that worked best for me which I appreciated greatly.

Now the biggest problem is finding a carrier for the stuff!! I live in a large town (approx 500,000 pop), and NO pharmacy in this city carries the 15mg spansules, not even generics.

Sigh. Adderall it is for the next week or two :/

Hey Jubb,
You know that a pharmacy will order it for you, right?

Yes I'm waiting patiently for my order to come in, I was just hoping I could have it this week because I have a huge chemistry test today.
