Wow, what a great resource this forum is! I am a few months into an ADD diagnosis, and I'm still not sure. I've read a few books, been to a psychiatrist and a psychologist, but neither has been very convincing. The MD just talked AT me for about 20 min. and gave me some Straterra. That didn't do any good, so we tried Concerta. Still no change, so now I'm a week into Adderall XR. The PhD gave me the TOVA test, and talked w/me for a while, and thinks I have "high functioning" ADD.
My question is, how severe do the symptoms that I keep reading about have to be in order for treatment to be necessary and successful? I realize thats a tough question, but I'm really on the fence here. My main problem is that I bounce around the house on my days off (2 out of every 3) with the best intentions of getting a million projects done. Instead, I may get nothing done, be completely exhausted at the end of the day, and yet I can swear I was doing stuff all day!
I didn't have the problems in school that seem to be the number one factor all the books describe. In fact, I did really well in school w/almost no effort until I hit college with a screeching halt! I finished, but didn't do very well. My job is not really affected by this (in fact, it kind of caters to it), yet I'm going through treatment anyway.
As far as the hyperfocus thing goes, if I'm reading a novel for enjoyment, I read extremely fast, and can stay at it for as long as I want. If its a textbook that does not interest me, I may be taking it in one minute, and rereading the same paragraph six times the next. Is this typical of ADD, or just a function of reading something boring?
If you made it this far in my post, thanks! Didn't really mean for it to be this long, but I have a million questions.
Any similar experiences would be very helpful!
