View Full Version : Still not sure I have it...???

Wow, what a great resource this forum is! I am a few months into an ADD diagnosis, and I'm still not sure. I've read a few books, been to a psychiatrist and a psychologist, but neither has been very convincing. The MD just talked AT me for about 20 min. and gave me some Straterra. That didn't do any good, so we tried Concerta. Still no change, so now I'm a week into Adderall XR. The PhD gave me the TOVA test, and talked w/me for a while, and thinks I have "high functioning" ADD.
My question is, how severe do the symptoms that I keep reading about have to be in order for treatment to be necessary and successful? I realize thats a tough question, but I'm really on the fence here. My main problem is that I bounce around the house on my days off (2 out of every 3) with the best intentions of getting a million projects done. Instead, I may get nothing done, be completely exhausted at the end of the day, and yet I can swear I was doing stuff all day!
I didn't have the problems in school that seem to be the number one factor all the books describe. In fact, I did really well in school w/almost no effort until I hit college with a screeching halt! I finished, but didn't do very well. My job is not really affected by this (in fact, it kind of caters to it), yet I'm going through treatment anyway.
As far as the hyperfocus thing goes, if I'm reading a novel for enjoyment, I read extremely fast, and can stay at it for as long as I want. If its a textbook that does not interest me, I may be taking it in one minute, and rereading the same paragraph six times the next. Is this typical of ADD, or just a function of reading something boring?
If you made it this far in my post, thanks! Didn't really mean for it to be this long, but I have a million questions.
Any similar experiences would be very helpful!

Welcome fireman, I too was diagnosed as an adult. I found it to be a relief (you mean I'm not stupid?) *laughs.

You sound a lot like my son and I; we can be extremely intelligent if we could only stay with the subject long enough. We are both diagnosed ADHD. Meaning I can do fifty thing's at once and never get anything accomplished.

What I have learned to do is make lists of everything that needs to be done. Most important first and I do not/ will not move on to the next no matter how simple until the one above it is crossed off.

lol This honestly started out as a welcome and knowledge that you were NOT alone.

I hope you find the forum's as informational as I have and I know you will find those involved to be very supportive.

Hugs
Cherity

Sounds like ADD to me..

But the simple answer to your question is:

You have a problem if the symptoms make life difficult for you.

If they don't... then rejoice in your uniqueness and enjoy life.

Welcome to the forums either way.

It doesn't make life miserable or anything, but it sure would be nice to change it!
I, too was diagnosed with the inattentive type, and procrastination is a big deal with me, as well. My favorite, though, is how I get all fired up about a new project, research it to death, work, work, work, and then leave all the little details UNFINISHED, left to view and torment me every time I see them!
I guess this would be the hyperfocus/lack of follow-through part?

Yes, but do not give up. The more you learn about yourself and ADD the more you learn to deal with such thing's and how to overcome them.

I was diagnosed with ADD but I have forgotten which type it was

But I am definatly ADHD hyper

always busy 17 thousand different projects on the go and in various stages but not quite done

But I do eventually get back and finish them

Just not in a logical order to my wife the Linear Thinker in the family
