It would be nice to be able to turn off moving pictures in our settings. I'm surprised no one has complained about this. As it is, you have to completely turn off all images or be stuck with the distraction while viewing the forums. Someone suggested hitting the escape key to do this, but it doesn't work on my computer (I'm on a Mac).

Mindbender, I'm not sure this is the only way to turn off animated avatars, but you can try it.

Go to userCP -->Edit Options -->Thread display options -->unclick "display avatars".

There is probably a better way, but I can't find it when searching.

I did that, but that completely turns off all images. I wouldn't mind seeing people's images, but the moving ones are just too distracting & keep diverting my attention from reading.

Hey, I got rid of my annoying signatures, I think there's only one other member with a moving signature. If enough people complain about an image being annoying to Admin I think that they would remove it.

Mindbender, this is something that is usually done on the client end, and rarely on the server end, (the website). The moving pictures that you see are image files, (usually gif), that your browser interprets to have many sequences of frames in them.

I was going to suggest the best way to stop this is to get a plugin for your browser, but for some reason noone has thought of doing this, (not in Firefox anyway). I only managed to find one - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2025/
Never heard of it before, and never used it. The alternative way is to setup a proxy that does this for you - the advantage being that you can set it for all websites you visit.

Alternatively, you can try the admins - they are an approachable bunch and they may have something that can do it for you.

If you click the 'esc' key, it should stop all animation on a page (including avatars)

edit: My mistake...missed the part about the "mac"

It gets pretty old having to hit the esc key every time I load a new page here. :(

pressing "esc" does disable animated avatars on macs . . . I just tried it on mine (using Leopard and firefox)

(there don't seem to be very many animated avatars/sigs right now on ADDF, just a couple people)

I use Safari, 10.4 & I have a macally keyboard....anyway "esc" button doesn't work with that configuration.

sorry, I have no idea with Safari. I think that most of us apple users (on ADDF) have firefox (i've found it's more friendly than Safari), which is likely why you haven't received much of a response.

I think with Safari you need some kind of extension to turn off animations, but i'm not sure about that, at all.

Are all pages animated for you? It sounds like it is just one or two people's sigs that are animated, and in that case, it should cut down on how many times you must hit esc to stop it. :)

That seems logical, only it seems that the most prolific posters are generally the ones with the animated avatars and siggies. (Not just here, but in another forum that I spend more time at.)
