View Full Version : To wait or not to wait?
TheOtherGuy 02-24-08, 02:28 PM I started 20mgs XR a couple of weeks ago. I can tell that the XR is working but I can also tell that I need a higher dose.
My doctor gave me a month supply of the 20mgs.
Should I just wait it out and keep taking those until the month is up, or should I call my doctor and try to get the dosage higher.
Also, will I be able to get the prescription filled at the pharmacy? I have been reading about a 30 day rule with this Adderall.
Thanks!
shakepurmake 02-24-08, 03:55 PM Wait wha? Theres a 30 day prescription wait on taking Adderall? Then why did my doc tell me to experiment with my dosage if theres a 30 day wait...
Back to your question, you say you can tell that the 20mg is working, but at the same time you need to up your dose because of what problems exactly?
If it is really bothering you then maybe you should call up your doc.
LittlePrincess 02-24-08, 05:01 PM Call and ask your doc before experimenting with doses. Though, he/she might want you to try this out for a month and then gradually increase your dose since you have the 20mg caps. In other words, he/she may want you to try 30mg caps (for example) before just doubling up to 40mg/day right away. Perhaps give this dose a chance for at least a week or two(?) I found my meds work better/worse depending on a number of factors such as: food, caffeine intake, sleep, stress levels, etc.
As for your original concern.... if he/she wants you to keep taking these and you need more meds, you'll just pick up a new prescription. No worries :)
Retromancer 02-24-08, 05:22 PM Ah the 'thirty day rule'. One of many realities of stimulant meds that never seem make it into the popular press. Yes call your doctor and tell him that you are not having the positive results you wanted. Never say that you believe your dose is too low to a doctor. [It's okay to say that here, of course ;) ] Either he will cut you a new scrip or tell you to hang on until your next scheduled appointment.
With luck you find an old ADHD hand who will be comfortable prescribing enough medication that you can 'titrate' -- find a dosage that works -- yourself. Unfortunately such docs are few.

So does that mean if my doc prescribed me 10 miligrams of Adderall XR 3 weeks ago and told me to experiment and determine what dose works best for me and he prescribes me 20 miligrams of Adderall XR(because it works for me the best) even though 30 days have not passed, I can still receive the medication without having to wait 30 days?
Forgot to ask this a while ago, but: How often does everyone go to their doc's for an appointment? Do you constantly have to schedule an appointment in order for him to prescribe you your medication or does he just phone in to the pharmacy and tell them to give 'John' this amount of 'Medication' for 30 days? Its just my mom is annoyed at having to take me to so many appointments...
dlmay277 02-24-08, 06:33 PM he cant phone in these prescriptions. they have to be picked up. As long as its a different script, you can fill it before 30 days. For ex, if you have a script for 20mg XR, you cant fill another one for 20mg XR for 30 days. But, if he writes you one for 30mg XR you can fill that one now, make sense?
I go see mine every 3 months. They are allowed to give you 3 months worth of scripts, they just have to write 3 separate ones and post date them. When I wanted to change my dose, I just called and talked to him, and he told me to just stop by the office to pick up the new script.

Oh wow thanks a ton for clarifying. Since they are allowed to give you 3 months worth of scripts, how would you go about approaching the doc to actually do this? Do you just ask him to write it out for 90 days after finding your perfect dose or what?
dlmay277 02-24-08, 09:10 PM mine just did it.. he's a FP not a psy, and he has a fairly busy practice, so he may have done it to save time.. plus he knows how busy I am most of the time.
QueensU_girl 02-24-08, 09:28 PM Phone your Doctor?
If you go ahead and up your dose yourself, then you will run out of pills, right?
Keep him/her in the know...

I see my doctor once a month, unless there is a prescription change; then I have to see him 2 weeks after the new prescription dosage or addition. I just happen to never have an appointment when my script is about to run out, so I just call the nurse and she mails me the new one after he writes it.
