I just got prescribed Barr dextroamphetamine 5mg. I'm supposed to take it once daily for the first week, then move up to twice daily the second week, and then three times daily onward. Does this sound like a typical titration?

Yes, this is very normal. The doctor will increase the dosage until he or she feels it is effective. Afterwords the doc will probably want to move on to Spansules if the appropriate dosages can be matched (the Spansules only come in 15mg tabs in my area).
When you get to the point of twice or third daily, get a watch or cell phone with an alarm to help remember to take your second or third dose. Otherwise, you'll sometimes forget and wonder why you're frazzled, or concentration is going off until you realise you missed a dose. If I recall I needed a minimum of one hour overlap so as not to dip.
Titrating to the correct dosage is the best the way to go.
Dexedrine reaches a steady state in ~3 days + your brain is mostly done adapting to it in ~2 weeks. As you take the same dosage for a longer period it may get a tiny bit stronger and level out after ~4-8 weeks.
Also dex is sensitive to PH so dont take it with acidic foods like citriis/juice + food that gives you heartburn.

Sounds sensible to me, wish my doctor agreed with us.
